When Obama Puts His Hand on the Lincoln Bible.

The other night as I was drifting off to sleep my mind went to an astounding part of the Bible.  Before I get to that let me say something about today. This is Inauguration Day and the day that we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King.  It is a day that we should be happy and proud as a nation.  Indeed it was my great wish that this would be so. Instead, we are treated to division, anger, and fear of our own government.

Today should be the celebration of Dr. King’s Dream instead it is, in my opinion, a nightmare.  Dr. King dreamed of a day when “my children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”   Instead of that day when character would trump race, we got the very opposite: a day when we cannot question character because of race.

In fact, we are getting to the place where we cannot question anything, or ask for transparency from the very people who hold power over us.  When the media, the intellectual community and a host of special interests stage a celebration of how they told the people to vote and now what to think,  it is the dawn of a hi tech slavery.

Today sadly reminds me of something that I saw in an episode of Bill Cosby.   Their daughter ran off and got married.  She brings her new husband home to dinner.  Bill Cosby playing the father says to the young man, “we don’t like you, but it is not your fault.”

Then he asked the young man, “What is your favorite meal?  Do you like steak?”  The young man said “yes.”  “What about baked potatoes?”  “Yes” he said again, “And the fixings?”  Again the new son in law says “yes.”  “Well,” the father concluded, “imagine your favorite meal being brought to you, on a garbage can lid instead of a plate.”  That is what our daughter did by bringing you here today.  You see, we looked forward to our daughter’s wedding; we looked forward to the day when we would welcome whomever she married like a son.  Instead, she brought you here on a garbage can lid.”

Today’s festivities will not, in my opinion, unify or bring hope to a weary nation.  It is the right meal on the right day but it is presented on a garbage can lid. The entire tone is one of conquest and reveling over foes vanquished.  It is an outsized affair sponsored by the very corporations who helped bulldoze this administration back into office. This is not the warm gathering of the American family.  This is the elite gathering to toast not how well they can govern, but how well they can market.

“The president who came into office speaking in lofty terms about bipartisanship and cooperation can only cement his legacy if he destroys the GOP. If he wants to transform American politics, he must go for the throat.  Obama’s only remaining option is to pulverize. Whether he succeeds in passing legislation or not, given his ambitions, his goal should be to delegitimize his opponents.”  -John Dickerson is Slate‘s chief political correspondent

John Dickerson’s honesty is refreshing even if his words are terrifying.   As a media supporter of Obama, he nails the agenda of Obama’s second term.  Obliterate the enemy.  Seize power by whatever means to ensure a legacy.

I wish that today was a day when a grateful president would be the president of all the people.  I wish that he would come clean on his endless string of scandals from Obamacare to his failure on jobs and the deficit and Benghazi.  I wish that he would hold out the hand of tolerance like the man whose birthday we remember today.

Sadly I believe that all we will get is hollow rhetoric. He will toss his colleagues a bone and dance the night away but tomorrow his war against the constitution will resume.

Finally, there is the issue of Obama taking the oath with his hand on Abraham Lincoln’s bible.  I get the feeling that he is not doing this to pay homage but to spike the ball.  He has been compared to Lincoln but he is in my opinion, the anti-Lincoln.  Here is how I see the two men:

Lincoln unified Obama divides.

Lincoln was humble in his greatness.  Obama is arrogant in his non greatness.

Lincoln used his popularity to help the people.  Obama uses people to help his popularity.

Lincoln worked to put God in Government.  Obama works to get God out of government and society.

Lincoln created the national day of prayer.  Obama skips them every year.

Lincoln yearned for a government of the people.  Obama wants a people of the government.

Lincoln said, “I have never denied the truth of the Scriptures; and I have never spoken with intentional disrespect of religion in general, or of any denomination of Christians in particular.”

Obama bullied and insulted the Catholic Church to violate its conscience.  He has given greater respect to Islam saying, “I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.”

Lincoln believed America was exceptional.  He said, “All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined could not, by force, take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years.”

In France Obama said that America “has shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive toward Europe.”

Lincoln said of fallen Americans, “The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract.”  Obama said of hard working Americans, “You didn’t build that,”

Now we come to the part about what happened to me as I was drifting off to sleep.  Daniel 5: 18-31:  “O king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom and majesty, glory and honor. 19 And because of the majesty that He gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him. Whomever he wished, he executed; whomever he wished, he kept alive; whomever he wished, he set up; and whomever he wished, he put down. 20 But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him. 21 Then he was driven from the sons of men, his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys. They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God rules in the kingdom of men, and appoints over it whomever He chooses. 22 “But you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, although you knew all this. 23 And you have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. They have brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified. 24 Then the fingers of the hand were sent from Him, and this writing was written.

25 “And this is the inscription that was written:

MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.

26 This is the interpretation of each word. MENE: God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it; 27 TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting; 28 PERES: Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.” 29 Then Belshazzar gave the command, and they clothed Daniel with purple and put a chain of gold around his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. 30 That very night Belshazzar, king of the Chaldeans, was slain. 31 And Darius the Mede received the kingdom, being about sixty-two years old.

I feel a direct connection between the arrogance of Belshazzar bringing out the Golden vessels and drinking from them and of Obama using the Bible of Abraham Lincoln and the birthday of Dr. King.  I fear that if this is his motive he will cross an invisible line.

God will not abide the abuse of holy things.  The vessels captured in the Temple were precious to God.  Dr. King and Lincoln are also precious to God in His love for America.   

The handwriting will be on the wall for Obama if he drinks to his own greatness from these vessels of honor.   

I am respect the office of the president but my first loyalty is to Jesus Christ.  I am guilty as charged of believing that it is God that made America great and that abandoning Him spells doom for the country.
