It is insane to despise national repentance

It was one of the most amazing moments of my life.  I stood on Sproul Plaza and spoke to thousands of students.  However I was shocked to discover what was really happening. My eyes were opened to see the insanity of those who despise national repentance.

The anti-God rhetoric we force fed our children would make Joseph Stalin proud.  And what do we have to show for it?  Since the day that our media, government and educational system declared war on God, the nations of the world, our economy, our sanity, our health and even nature itself have declared war on us.

The richest man who ever lived once said, “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall” – Proverbs 16:18.   Pride has blinded us.  We are gripped by an arrogance that actually wants to speed up our destruction and refuses to consider how national repentance has saved America in the past.

We know it is dark because the sun has gone down. We know why America has gone dark but we will not admit it.

King Hezekiah told the people why they were miserable and in danger: “For our fathers have trespassed and done evil in the eyes of the Lord our God; they have forsaken Him, have turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the Lord, and turned their backs on Him. They have also shut up the doors of the vestibule, put out the lamps, and have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel. Therefore the wrath of the Lord fell upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has given them up to trouble, to desolation, and to jeering, as you see with your eyes. For indeed, because of this our fathers have fallen by the sword; and our sons, our daughters, and our wives are in captivity. – Chronicles 29:6-9

We begged God to leave and like a gentleman…He left.  We have been on the run ever since.  Running to keep our nation safe, running to find work, running from criminals, running to rehab, and running to save our children.  Our waking moments are consumed by thoughts of Ebola, Isol, hackers, drug cartels, and the tyranny of government.

It is insane to despise national repentance! How clearly did Jesus describe this insanity!  He said, “Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! – Matthew 23:24.  The gnat we should swallow is our pride and fall before the Holy and Merciful God and cry out for forgiveness.  Instead we just keep on swallowing camels!

-We would rather keep on having body bags coming home from war.

-We would rather keep on having the cops at our doors bringing news of children dead from drugs or a drive by.

-We would rather be eaten alive by radical Islam and our porous southern border than to admit the insanity of our political correctness.

-We would rather keep preaching the insanity that Poppa God is so into us that we are only generation of Christians ever who are exempted from repentance.

I was wrecked by the passion of those who attended the Call Berkeley; they ignited a fresh fire for in me to see national repentance.  The thousands that attended The Call cried out to God in a way that I had never seen before.

They fasted. They prayed.  They came from a great distance.  This made something else clear to me and it is very disturbing.  Not nearly enough Bay Area pastors were there to join in the prayer and only a few local Christians came to Berkeley.

This was further insanity to me!  The Bay Area is the poster child of what ails America.  The ideologies that run rampant here are the author and finisher of most of our national misery.

If anyone should have come running to this event it is the Pastors and Christians of the Bay Area!  My eyes were opened to the unspoken contempt that many believers feel about the idea of national repentance.

Check your own heart!  Do you despise the idea of crying out to God for mercy?  Pastor, are you preaching an indulgent gospel?  Are you downplaying the need for solemn assemblies?

Yet with all of this, I came away with a contagious faith for revival!  If only you could have been there to see how the worship and the intercession opened the heavens in a place famed for starting revolution.  Let it be Lord!

Most of all I came away with the firm conviction that if anyone tells me they despise the concept of national repentance, I will no longer respectfully disagree, I will tell you that it is insanity.

  1. Local Christians were not there in large part *because* local pastors were not there — I can virtually guarantee this event was not promoted or even mentioned in many local churches. What explains this non-response — apathy? Fear of disappointment? A territorial spirit in these people that resents ‘outsiders’ doing what *they* should be doing, but *have not done*?

It isn’t just a call to repentance that they reject, it is seemingly *any* Christian assembly for any purpose; I have seen the same at worship symposiums, Promise Keeper assemblies, you name it. The crowd comes in buses and RVs, not in cars and on foot. Speakers ask the crowd, “who came more than 50 miles to be here?” Hands go up all around, and everyone cheers. The next question is almost never asked but should be: “How many local pastors are here with their congregations?” In most meetings, you would hear crickets chirping.
