Whatever happened?

Whatever happened to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?  You don’t hear about it anymore.  Churches don’t pray with people to receive it anymore.  There’s a big reason why.
Preacher, if you stopped presenting the Baptism of the Holy Spirit to your people—Satan made you do it.  If there is no room in your service for people to receive this urgent gift—the enemy seized control of your agenda.  If your people don’t even know what it is—you will answer to God.
No matter how noble, persuasive, or convincing the argument, the decision to exclude the Baptism of the Holy Spirit from the life of the church, is a decision conceived in hell.

Omitting this Baptism was a masterstroke of Lucifer.

He knew this was the most destructive deception possible.  It created lukewarm Christians.  It single handedly wiped out a huge amount of our soul winning.  And, it opened the door to untold heresy.

Today we are swimming in more false teaching, false prophecy and false Christianity than ever before.  All across the internet ministries dabble in new age hybrids of Christian faith, exotic extremes, drunkenness and even perversion.   Turns out, the church is the other swamp that needs draining.

Noted Christian Apologist Ravi Zacharias said, “I had dinner with the most popular preacher on television.  He told me that he did not see much difference between Islam and Christianity.”

How can we hang the blame for such foolishness on neglecting the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?   Let’s examine the evidence.
Jesus said, “John 16:13  “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.”
Jesus calls Him the Spirit of truth.  He imparts hunger for truth.  It is futile to layer truth on the unwilling soul.  False teaching abounds from the lack of hunger the Holy Spirit awakens.  Let’s go back to the root:

Don’t make a move without it!

Acts 1: 4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
The church has no witness without it.  Acts 1:8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The Apostles considered it an extreme urgency for all who believed to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8: 14 “Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.”
-Acts 19: 1 “And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”  4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”
5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.”

We have two extremes in the church:  Those who believe in nothing and those who believe in everything.

Or to put it another way: We have those know nothing of what the Bible says and those who believe anything, anyone says about the Bible. Both are products of a lack of discernment and power.  It is only after you experience the real presence and power of God that you know what is fake.

Look at the discipleship result of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost:

Acts 2: 41 “Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.”

One big reason that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is not preached today is because it is the natural enemy of church marketing.

When God falls, church culture instantly changes.  Human promotion becomes obsolete.   An audience morphs into an army.  An insatiable hunger for the Word of God replaces sales pitches.
The preacher who withholds the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is guilty of treason—of withholding a priceless gift bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus—of holding back an edge of power that would keep the believer strong, alert, and able to win others.  It endows them with a prayer language that pierces all adversity.  How dare we hold this back!
The Pentecostal revival is the greatest Christian revival in history.  Beginning in the humble Azusa Street Mission, it has blazed for on for over 100 years, with over 650 million converts.  Only one thing explains it:  The Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  1. I was taught until age 35 I’m 80 now, that this was of the devil.
when my eyes were opened to the truth what a joy it was. Wish I hadn’t missed out in those earlier years. So glad I finally learned the truth…

    1. Dear Mario,
This entire article is so exciting and inspirational, what you quoted from Acts 2: section is profoundly relevant, you wrote; “43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.”

It has been witnessed to me by The Holy Spirit, that today far too many in America and in the church culture have NO fear of God…in Hebrew that english word ‘fear’ translates to, respect, reverence, and Godly awe. In this Acts scripture account, at verse 43, that same word for fear in Greek means the same as the Hebrew BUT the really exciting part is this, (Phobos/Greek for fear) also means ‘Reverence for one’s Husband!’ HUGE this is HUGE, because without Baptism of Holy Spirit how can any person BE within The Bride like church of Christ?
I am one who had an unhealthy fear of being Baptized with The Holy Spirit, due to having grown up my childhood & young adult life in the Southern Baptist church. But once I fully received my Baptism in Holy Spirit, my whole spiritual trajectory exploded. My commitment to Christ was heightened beyond compare, as well as my husbands, as he got the Baptism at that time too. WE had the Change that counts! We no longer lived only for ourselves hanging desperately onto our Faith, our Faith was ignited on fire!… so in Love with our heavenly Husband, King Jesus.
Once you’ve got The anointing, that comes from Holy Spirit fire, NOTHING is the same in Jesus Name.🦅

  2. As urgent as this is, without sound teaching on the Gift of The Holy Spirit and how the Manifestations of His Presence are to be presented through us to the church with a sound mind and a Jehovah delegated will, I am hesitant to go with The Baptism, without the teaching, without the discipline.

The reason people are afraid of the Baptism is because of the abuses that have occurred due to a lack of knowledge.

I love being able to pray in the Spirit. But, all too often the Word of Knowledge, The Word of Wisdom and Discerning of Spirits is relegated to doubt and unbelief.

We need to speak in Tongues, Tongues of Fire and Boldness.

But, we need *all* nine manifestations decently and in order, ordered maturity.

And, I fear that even some of the old-timers were so caught up with Tongues they forgot that The Holy Spirit was well rounded and a complete package.

And, yes, we *NEED* The Holy Spirit because we don’t and most likely can’t pray as we ought without yielding our wills to His, Most High.

And, until we are willing to put into diligent practice 2 Chronicles 7:14 I fear making this the priority will result in more strange fire than Holy Fire.

    My Two cents…
(Which is probably about what it’s worth, But, there it is…)

  3. Truth. So much truth spoken here. I actually stopped attending my church of 20+ years because of the pure marketing and fancy lighting that took center stage at services. My pastor actually said once at a service that “I use work here.” I knew something was very, very wrong. I miss fellowship but can’t go back.

  4. I have prayed for years for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and still nothing! I would love to pray pure, perfect prayers to my Saviour. What am I doing wrong? Thank you, Mary.

    1. Dear Mary Marr,
Maybe it isn’t that you’re doing anything wrong Mary, just TRUST Jesus, for He told us that if we asked our earthly Father for an egg would he give us a scorpion(Luke11:12) then Jesus went on to say…”how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
If you’re anything like I once was Mary, you could have Trust issues, mine were due to not having a good relationship with my earthly Dad. But, when I clearly understood that due to Christ’s love and sacrifice for me, I FINALLY did have a heavenly Father that loved me a whole bunch😋 I then was able to TAKE what Pa Pa God had to give me. Keep asking our Holy Father Mary!🙏

    2. Mary, don’t give up! I also prayed for it for many years. I had to get on my face and confess some unforgiveness that I had held onto, and bang, it happened. Ask God to show you if there is anything you need to get rid of, give it to Him. You will be praying in tongues in no time, I have no doubt!! God is so good!!

    3. Mary … I have done that as well, for over 50 years and still nothing. But I still trust and follow. I walk in Yeshua’s footsteps as closely as I can, and I TRUST Him, even without that “Baptism in the Holy Spirit.” I believe He dwells in me and I in Him, regardless. All I can suggest is continue in Him, regardless of how you FEEL. Sometimes our feelings get in the way of our Spirit.

Blessings and happy Hanukkah! He celebrated Hanukkah, you know, and He warned against man’s traditions, which are mostly derived from Paganism.

    4. The Baptism, like Salvation, is a sovereign act of Grace. You can not earn it, you must accept it. As a Pentecostal I know we’ve come up with all kinds of formulas for receiving.

I remember once a group of us were trying to pray this guy through and were not getting anywhere. When suddenly The Holy Spirit fell on him and all of us “experts” were shoved out of the way, literally. I myself nearly went head over heels over some folding chairs behind me.

It was as if The Holy Spirit was saying get out of my way and let me handle this…

The Baptism of The Holy Spirit is of Grace not of Law. It must be freely received. There is nothing you can do to earn it.

This is hard for some, whether Messianics or Legalistic Old School Pentecostals.

It’s not an, “I have to do this” or “I have to do that”, it’s a surrender and trust issue, and with stammering lips you find yourself praying in The Spirit, and the more you trust Him, the more fluent you become.

Speaking of Messianics, I love Jewish Feasts for their pictorial portrayal of Jehovah’s acts of Power, Grace and Mercy. But, I have a friend who feels “lost” if she doesn’t adhere to the dietary regulations and Feasts.

She was my Sunday School teacher, a peer. sadly I doubt she has prayed in Tongues since allowing her salvation to become a “have to” instead of freely received by Grace.

I don’t know why this has come to mind. But, I hope I am writing within my Father’s Love.

I think all of us find things to become hobbled by legalism. For me it is the tithe, something I believe every Christian should practice as an act of worship. But, when I get the calculator out it has always become a legalistic obligation to me. Strange man that I am!

I pray that this helps… And, don’t be afraid of stammering… 🙂 Just do it with Joy and Laughter, especially at ourselves… And, all our theories, methods and manners…

After all we are a peculiar people! 1 Peter 2:9

  5. Brother Scambach stated, This is the office and administration of The Holy Ghost. Back in the early 70’s in East Oakland we tarried for hours waiting for the promise of The Holy Spirit. Today’s church is full of worldly Gimmicks trying to invite the world into its club.

  6. Mario.

    Right on !

When Phillip went down and preached the Gospel to the Samarians -they received Salvation, Healing, Deliverance, Blind eyes open ( even Simon the sorcerer believed ) They were water baptized but the Apostles realized they had not been baptized with the Holy Spirit so as you said laid hands on them and prayed and they were baptized with the Holy spirit. Where does a Christian get power to live the Christian life?

The baptizment of the holy Spirit.

Paul told the Ephesians he had held nothing back but gave them all the council of the Lord -definitely including the BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!!!

  7. ” The church is comfortable, too comfortable; but soon….

Times of testing and woe, times of deception coming upon my people. Great hardship, much travail, weeping, mourning for what they have lost. For holiness, righteousness they do not mourn, but for the ‘good ole days’ when church was fun, a great place to hang out with friends, they will weep bitterly. America is a cesspool of decadence, disobedience, lies, hate and bitterness. My church has traded robes of righteousness for rap with donuts and coffee.

What can wash away your sins…nothing but the Blood of JESUS. Are you washed in the blood? Are your garments spotless, are they white as snow, are you washed in the blood of the Lamb or do stains and shame cover your nakedness? Seek the living God…do not settle for less.

Many falling away, rejecting truth they embrace lies, false doctrines and glib gospels. Time is slipping away. Do quickly what you know to do. Labor in My field…time is slipping away. The redeemed of the LORD must not cower in fear, nor run and hide. You must be rooted and grounded in Me. Perfect love cast out fear. This will be your finest hour. Shine to the glory of God.”

  8. Wow this is so powerful and true. The church I have gone to for 4 years was great until about a year ago, and I saw Satan infiltrate this wonderful church and get them out of Gods will. No they do not preach about the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I literally heard the head pastor say one service “oh you don’t have to worry about Satan, he is too busy to be bothered with you”. A lie straight from Satan, I have since been released by God to leave this church. But they are good people I keep them in my prayers and have faith God will show them the error of their ways. Thanks for the truth you speak i read all your emails and am very blessed by them.

  9. I am amazed at this post.  Recently I attended a private prayer meeting at a church in san jose californiacalled Calvary Chapel, formerly Calvary Community Church. This is the same church you preached at years agowhere a mighty move of God broke out.  It was at this church years ago I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. And I was recently just thinking, I remember back in the 70’s when it seems like every service I went to, they had at minimum an altar call to receive Jesus and commonly you would be invited forward to receive the gift of the Baptism. Now, the only thing that is ‘common’ at these church gatherings is a vague promise of receiving ….your personal word from the Lord….so bring your Walmart recorder or cell phone with you! I guess now churches are selling lifetime membershipsin the ‘Bless Me Club’? Surely the charismatic love boat has sprung a serious leak and is currently in dry dock. Be blessed, and keep preaching the truth, we may all need it one day,Jerry Woytus

  10. So true!! I received when I was 12 years old, and it was preached that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the very next step. It was stressed that it isn’t just a desire, it is vital, you need to be, you must be baptized with the Holy Spirit. I haven’t heard that preached in so long, I don’t even remember the last time, and also, I don’t remember the last time that I saw people prayed for to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit was poured out in Acts, the change in lives was tremendous! We still need it today, and even more so in these evil days!!!!

  11. Thanks, Mario for the huge reminder of this vital truth for the Church: there’s no substitute for the indwelling presence and power of the Holy Spirit: not talent, not personalities, not strategies for church growth, etc., etc.. There are times when I feel grieved because of the lack of awareness, acknowledgement and intimate relationship with the precious Third Person of the Trinity. Not so long ago while crying out to the Lord in prayer, in repentance, in plainly turning all my attention to Him, the Spirit spoke out through my own voice (it startled me), “This is the way, walk in it!” I’d been praying, emptying myself out, praying in the Spirit (tongues) and that’s when the words simply broke through! I think He is grieved a lot these days.

  12. I don’t know if this is a return email address to receive responses but this was a beautiful powerful great article it has made my heart sad for decades watching the baptism of the Holy Spirit become an asterisk in the church world thank you for your courage I pray blessings anointing and Power to increase on your mind and heart and Ministry

  13. A friend of mine once told me; “The most important event in the life of an unbeliever is to get saved. The most important event in the life of a believer is to get filled with the Holy Ghost.”

  14. Thank you, Pastor Mario, for speaking out about this. I too have seen a cooling off among Pentecostals on preaching and speaking about the Holy Spirit. There used to be much for emphasis on seeking the Baptism, but it’s becoming a rare thing, even in churches that are wonderful in most ways. I think they may be avoiding speaking about it on Sunday mornings, for fear of offending new converts. So, there is more preaching on, “lifting one’s self up”, “self-improvement”, “being blessed”, and such. The Baptism is saved for the prayer meetings. As wonderful as the prayer meetings are-and they are-it seems like a better strategy would be to have classes available during the week on improving your life, and to speak in some way on the Holy Spirit every Sunday (and Saturday night) service. Not necessarily to preach on Him every service, but to make it clear on a continual basis that we are a church that believes in allowing the Spirit to direct every service, and if He wants to take over, let Him. also, that we are totally dependent on Him! Church has to be more than a handful of praise songs (that seldom lead into actual worship) with a lot of jumping up and down, a bunch of announcements and a sermon on self-improvement, or we are in trouble. We’ll never win the city without the Holy Spirit. There is some emphasis on soul-winning, which is highly commendable, but with no emphasis on seeking and knowing the Power of the Spirit, we are just telling people to go out and do it on their own. We’ll dry up at this rate. Assuming that the unchurched can’t handle the moving of the Spirit is a huge mistake. They may not understand it at first, but He will draw them like a magnet. In fact, I know He will. I’ve seen Him do it. Let the Spirit move. They must be told to seek Him and ask Him to fill them to overflowing with Him! When they begin to see Him move…You won’t be able to keep them from the altar.

  15. I remember listening to a tape of Kathryn Kuhlman a few years ago. She was speaking at Oral Roberts University about her life and explained how when she was just a teenager while standing in church she was overcome by the Holy Spirit.
She went on to say that she was not afraid of any man, demon or even Satan himself. Her only fear was that somehow she would grieve the Holy Spirit.

Her testimony was so important in that she paints the picture of just how special this relationship is. Her ministry was so powerful because of the Holy Spirit. Just as it was always meant to be!
