THE LESSON

First of all, Mario Murillo Ministries is still a California Corporation and we are dedicated to seeing revival here.  However, to learn how the church lost her witness here demands brutal honesty.

15.8 million Californians claim to be Christian—more by far, than any other state in the union.  When California went abjectly hippie, communist, one has to wonder where were the Christians?   Let’s stipulate that only one third of all believers in California can vote.  According to statistics, that would still be 5.26 million people.

Gavin Newsom won a popular vote margin of  just under 2.9 million.  Why couldn’t the Church—with her vast store of congregants—come up with another 3 million votes to win the election?  If every Christian who could vote, voted for righteousness, they would have won by a landslide. There’s a bigger question:

Why did Christians vote for Gavin Newsom? He is even most hostile to our values than Jerry Brown was.  We know they did, because he could not win without their vote.  The church had the power—at every turn—to stop the liberal agenda in California.  Why didn’t she?

I know that judges overturned the will of the people with Prop 8.  I get that there are union crime families in California.  I realize that free speech is dying on the left coast.  I also know there is widespread voter fraud.  All of that considered, it still does not explain how such a vast voting bloc could be neutralized.

This is not a hatchet job on believers in the Golden State.  I have sacrificed a great part of my life for the churches there.  I don’t believe the fault lies with rank and file believers.  I also know there are many godly pastors faithfully serving on the West Coast.

No, this disaster crept in like a Trojan Horse.  I saw it firsthand and preached against it from the first day I saw it.  It was a masterstroke of Satan that began over 30 years ago.  When I tell you the culprit, a part of you will be shocked, and another part will recognize why I am right instantly.

The problem was the church growth movement.  More harm than you can possibly imagine came from the seemingly innocuous words “church growth movement.”  And, yes indeed it was a movement.

The initial victim was unity.  The next victim was soul winning.  The final victim was Bible literacy.  Here is how it worked:

When numbers mattered more than anything, California pastors began to see other pastors as the competition.  Hollywood, drugs, atheism, and sexual perversion were no longer the threat—now it was your brother in Christ.  Ministers became suspicious of one another, and began to isolate themselves citing their “big vision.”

Then, these regional pastors inadvertently created a new morality.  Sin was not the sin defined in scripture—sin was now anything that hindered growth.  By removing the offensive parts of the Bible, they also removed the parts that had the power to change people.

They steered clear of righteousness by saying “confrontational messages offend the very people we are trying to reach.”  This is code for “it is bad for business.”

To maximize growth, churches felt compelled to become self-contained entertainment centers, who didn’t need anyone else.  This destroyed mass evangelism, like what we saw with Billy Graham in neutral stadiums and auditoriums.  The photo below is from the Billy Graham Crusade in the Los Angeles coliseum in 1963.  120,000 are inside and 30,000 more could not get in.  This is unimaginable in Los Angeles today.

Soon California churches became expert at drawing audiences but leaving them unchanged by the Gospel.  Hundreds of thousands could belong to a church and see nothing wrong with abortion or gay marriage. Why?  Because their spiritual leader never talked about it.  Believers assumed that all of this was acceptable under the constant drumbeat of inclusiveness.

When the pastors noticed that the people loved their “nonreligious” appearance and behavior, they began to let down their guard.  The innocent wine and cocktails turned in a drinking habit.  Other dark trends that I will not mention became common among these leaders.  Thus, they were powerless to address the rampant immorality in their congregations.  They were also powerless to form a multi-church statewide voter movement.

Soon, Movie stars, pop stars, and famous athletes became status symbols for these churches.  Instead of the mega pastor discipling these celebrities, the celebrities discipled them.   It became impossible for these preachers to quote scripture, teach doctrine, or oppose liberal agendas.

Finally, taking a stand against left wing politicians became unloving.  Pastors escaped their duty by saying “that is not my calling.”  They took the Bible out of context in telling them that any political statements were judgmental.  Any Christian voter registration effort was downplayed or banned.

Soon Satan had tightened his noose and masses of Christians were oblivious to the warfare around them—most of all, they were ignorant of the ultimate price their children would have to pay for their doctrinal illiteracy.

The things these pastors preached gave no inkling of what believers were about to face.  Their child could be suspended for wearing a Christian t-shirt.  Their job in Silicon Valley could be lost if they testified on the job.  Textbooks that taught alternative sexual lifestyles were forced on their children.  The streets grew violent and the Universities became intolerant.  In short, these churches prepared their crowds for a world that doesn’t exist and did not stop the one that now exists.

California Christians—there is still hope!  The Christian history of California proves that great movements of God can come out of nowhere.  The Jesus movement appeared when a flood of immorality gripped the state.  God can do it again!  As I wrote recently, there is a secret about California that Satan viciously protects: Many in California are searching for God. We see it right now in Marysville where hundreds have been born again and the harvest demands we extend the meetings!

Nevertheless—it is simple truth:  the church growth movement was destructive.   Instead of building on the Rock—which would have given them a large church anyway—they built on sand.  The storm that Jesus warned us of has come.   They sent sheep out of their services unprotected and unable to withstand the storm of left-wing tyranny that  has set the state adrift in a sea of chaos.

Christians across America, take a lesson from California.  If the most popular churches in your state resemble the ones in this blog beware, the same crisis is already in your state.

  3. Thank you MARIO for being a voice crying in the wilderness of human viewpoint that has amassed thousands to keep the sheep scattered in derision and unsheparded in the truth of the Word and so complacently unarmed and unresustant to false doctrines that the world promotes…..we need the wake up call of your ministering blogs to keep watch on our ways …that we seek the Lord with all our hearts that He May direct our paths to discernment and maturity in Christ…the Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom ….Selah

    1. Amen Sandra!!!!!!!
From what Mario says here today and what Holy Spirit revealed to me several weeks back, it is obvious that “The Fear of God” has vacated the hearts and operations of those people and places of worship Mario mentioned here today.
Dearest Mario, I would add also, that the hinge pin of decline in traditional Christian doctrine has been brought to the forefront due to… so many people who attend these type of church culture environments in CA & elsewhere simply put, just do not believe that Socialism is a bad and a heinously covert form of human government. They actually have processed it in their minds that Socialism is a more Christ like way to govern human beings.??
In my opinion, that is satan’s truest weaponization against the Saints and those who might become Saints in the new future. If one believes that Socialism is the Way ‘Jesus would govern’ then one is duped into believing all the rest of the liberal indoctrination that has flooded the American cultural landscape.

      1. Well said! Lord have mercy. Let’s keep up our prayers that people wake up to the truth before it’s too late. God bless you all!

  4. So well said, Mario. We are with you, out of the box. I sent you a letter to info@mariomurillo.org My husband I want to help. We were there, in Marysville, but had to come back to Washington State to take care of our businesses. We are getting ready to re-join you in California. We are praying, sending money, and want to present our bodies as living sacrifices.

  6. Rev 20:12 I saw the dead, both great and small, standing before God’s throne. And the books were opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. [ I have heard all kinds of junk said here, BUT WHAT BOOKS DO PEOPLE THINK HE IS TALKING ABOUT HERE, THE 66 BOOKS OF THE BIBLE, DID YOU DO WHAT THE BOOK SAID, DID YOU DO THE WORKS THE BOOK SAID, DID U NOT DO WHAT THE WORD SAID NOT DO, DID YOU BUILD YOUR FOUNDATION ON THE SOLID ROCK JESUS CHRIST or did you build on sinking sand, they were all judged according to what was written in the book’s, THE BIBLE, if you don’t read, you can’t really know God, for the word is God and with out relationship you only know about God, it takes presence to change people, chains fall off in his presence, people get delivered in his presence, people are saying I am judging people, I wouldn’t judge any one, BUT THE BOOK SURE DOES, HE DON’T HAVE TO JUDGE YOU, YOU JUDGE YOUR SELF BY WHETHER YOU DO WHAT IS IN THE BOOK OR, { AND THE BOOKS WERE OPENED, AND THEY WERE JUDGED ACCORDING TO WHAT WAS WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS} IT’S SIMPLE IF WE DON’T FOLLOW THE BOOKS INSTRUCTION, WE HAVE CONDEMNED OURSELVES, we judge our selves by wheter or not we do as the book say’s. Good Word God Bless Brother Mario

  7. This morning as I was interceding for the work in Marysville, I cried out to God that California has not fulfilled her destiny.  God called her His GOLDEN state.  She chose brass… counterfeit, inferior, imitation, look alike instead….Hollywood, tinsletown…He is grieved.  He wants her back.  Like Hosea bought back Gomer, you are His vessel to buy California back. I am praying. God will do this.  His heart yearns for her.JoySent from my Sprint Samsung Galaxy S8.

  8. Read Nehemiah Chapter 2 , I believe it applies to this work in California. Opposition will arise, do not be afraid. Be bold and courageous! The youth are responding! Neh 2:17-18 the response to opposition is verse 20. Be bold and courageous Mario! God is leading!

  9. America is on a slippery slope.
I wish that you could preach in every church in America. The church has allowed too much damage to happen and Americans are about to feel the pain.
Crying out to God is our only hope.
Thank you Mario for always speaking truth !

  10. I woke up today and started to pray. It came to me to read in psalms ( not necessarily a “out of no where” inspiration, because we are studying psalms in our men’s prayer group). but I believed I was directed to read in psalms and all of a sudden I started shouting psalms 14, crying out loudly, uncontrollably the psalms of David. I was a little distrubing, I see how and why it happened. Its part of the groanings of the righteous church in this world. Have mercy on me Lord Jesus Christ, a sinner!
I am praying regularly, crying out regularly to God for righteousness to return to the land. Here is Psalms 14: 1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
He convinces the wicked by the light of their conscience
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD. 5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous. 6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the LORD is his refuge.
He glories in the salvation of God
7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad. KJV.

  11. The church has lost its bearing and sold out to 501(c) 3 which dictates what can and cannot be said from the pulpit. Sold their souls. J esus said, “Give to Ceasar what belongs to Caesar. Give to God what belongs to God.” Taxes belong to Cesar (the state). Any church who is under 501(c)3 tax emery status is property of the world.

    1. Well said, sister! Thank you for exposing those chains. The churches have put these chains on themselves. You cannot serve God and mammon. The people who give look for a governement kick back on their giving—a tax reduction. No wonder the power of the Holy Spirit has not been manifest!

      1. Your statement is one that has resonated with me for many years. Coming from UK we don’t get such a tax break for giving, so I have always found it strange that US does allow it and technically people aren’t giving their ’10 per cent’ if they get some back from the Government…sleight of hand comes to mind. I pray people wake up to this deceit and realize as you said “You cannot serve God and mammon.”

  12. The Lord showed me the dangers of the Church Growth movement 30 years ago. I was pastor of a new congregation a few miles away from Willow Creek Church in Barrington Illinois. Bill Hybels – church growth guru- was the lead pastor. He started the church with bitterness towards charismatic. Wittingly or unwittingly, his concepts all but destroyed the move of God.

  13. The Church Growth movement was damaging. Pastors were encouraged to worship at the altar of “Success!” At this altar, some sacrificed their integrity in order to attract a bigger crowd. Pastors were ridiculed who reminded people that Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.”(Luke 9:23)
Instead, the goal of sermons was to entertain the audience. Church was to be “Fun!” Some people became disillusioned and decided they could have more “fun” in a bar.
When the dust settled, we learned that some “Church Growth” had been achieved by “transfer growth”—people moving from one church to another one. Church growth did not result from large numbers of people making first-time commitments to Christ, and sadly it did not cause huge numbers of people to become true disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
