WHY TRUE PREACHING MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there: in her fertile land, and boundless prairies, and it was not there. Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great” (Alexis de Tocqueville, 1835).

Comte De Tocqueville was one of the brightest minds of his time: a French aristocrat, diplomat, political scientist, and historian. He cut through the veneer and identified preaching as the prime source of our genius. Think of that. He pinpointed the fire in our pulpits as the source of our greatness!

Our recent blog, about the feeble response of Christian leaders to the present madness in America, was widely accepted by believers, and just as widely rejected by leaders—celebrity leaders. Perhaps Tocqueville’s quote may help you understand why I hold them responsible for our national debacle. My severity toward them is not because I have a low opinion of pastors, it is because I have a high opinion of preaching. Like Alexis de Tocqueville, I believe anointed preaching to be the true source of our greatness, and bad preaching to be the true source of our weakness.

Preaching was never supposed to be like this, but it has been shallow for the last 25 years. It was supposed to convict, convince, equip, and launch disciples into secular society. Instead, modern preaching echoed what the world was already saying. Instead of bringing powerful Christians to a hurting world, these preachers brought the dysfunction of the world to believers. Modern preaching did not equip, but instead, it enabled. It did not utterly denounce sin—it negotiated with it, creating birth-defective converts.

The American church de Tocqueville encountered in 1835 had fire in the pulpit. It is because we do not have that fire in our pulpits today, that we have fires in our streets. Because preachers choose to tell soothing stories instead of proclaiming Truth, our young people believe lies and honor truly stupid ideas and follow truly evil leaders.

1 Peter 3:15 says, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” Was there ever a hope, in our current church climate of creating sanctified hearts who could give answers?

I stand accused of being too hard on American preachers. I am rejected for placing too high a responsibility for our current disaster on their shoulders. Some of their whining baffles me. Celebrity preachers cannot have it both ways. They are the ones who accepted the lofty praise, superstar status, and wealth. Like athletes who got the big contract—these preachers were expected to perform. But when it came to saving a nation from wickedness, they were a bitter let down.  You don’t call yourself “the anointed vessel for this hour”—and then fizzle, in this, America’s darkest hour.

Charles Finney wrote, “Brethren, our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits. If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation.” (The Decay of Conscience, 1873)

Perhaps the only cure for such preaching is to depopularize it and defund it. Perhaps the fault lies as much with the fans of these preachers. In my book, Vessels of Fire and Glory, I wrote about the Contaminated Crowd. They are described in glaring detail in 2 Timothy 4:2-4, “Proclaim the Word. Keep your sense of urgency in season and out of season. Reprove, admonish, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not tolerate sound instruction, but having ears itching (for something pleasing), they will gather to themselves teachers chosen to satisfy their own lusts, and will turn aside from hearing the Truth and wander off into man-made myths.”

There is a reason that so much preaching today is festooned with props, smoke, emotionalism and entertainment. Small wonder that the slightest manifestation of the Spirit is touted as a miracle. It is no surprise that repentance is seldom if ever called for. The devil has seen to it that the American Church was totally unprepared for the multiple onslaughts unleashed against it in 2020.

And yet, there is a glorious sign on the horizon! There is a hint that actual preaching may return. There are young men and women displaying dangerous tendencies, such as reading revival history. Young leaders are disenchanted with the attraction-church model. They are asking threatening questions, desiring old ways—the ways that dislodge devils and release true signs and wonders.

God is stirring hearts, disrupting plans and driving young leaders to the kind of fire we need—the fire that can make America good and great, once again.

Vessels of Fire and Glory

Vessels of Fire and Glory is Mario’s newest book. It reached number one on Amazon among all Spirit-filled books. John Kilpatrick who led the Pensacola Revival said this after he read Vessels of Fire and Glory: “As I read the manuscript for Mario Murillo’s new book, Vessels of Fire and Glory, I said to myself, “Finally!” Mario has measured the church and the nation in this season and did not hold anything back. His honesty is like the sun rising inside a dark cave. This release is a paradox—it is sobering and refreshing; it is symptoms and the cure. I believe this revivalist has penned a treatise that should be in the hands of all who lead the work of God.”

 Edgewise

Here is a book about the end times with a totally different approach. It does not focus on how the world will end but on how to live as the curtain comes down on humanity. Powerful, practical, and encouraging.

Critical Mass

Critical Mass is the best-selling book Mario Murillo has ever written. It has been acclaimed as a classic on how to pray for, surrender to, and sustain revival. It is required reading in many colleges and training centers.

  1. I love this talk Mario – as I do all of them. They are so encouraging and don’t ever apologise for telling the truth. Truth is the loDeniseser in all we are seeing in the news. We need it to jump start us into evangelising those we meet every day and Jesus will put those who need to hear what He says through us onto our path if we ask Him. God Bless.

    1. God had a problem with Jonah. When Jonah got right with God, then Nineveh got right with God. Just read what God did to Jonah to get his attention. You think perhaps God will use some strong medicine to get the attention of soulish, limp wristed preachers, who are playing church games and trifling with the truth? Little boys with big titles who are obsessed with being in control, looking good, feeling good, and remaining undisturbed. WE NEED MORE PREACHERS LIKE MARIO WHO REFUSE TO SHUT UP.

  2. “Preaching was never supposed to be like this, but it has been shallow for the last 25 years.”

Thank you Mario for giving us some historical perspective to what has happened to the pulpit and to the hearers! The Charles Finney quote is chilling and shakes right to the core. I continue to pray that it is not too late for America to return to what made her great- namely faith and obedience in and to Christ.

  3. It’s so true, and scripture says that we all not strive to be teachers because God will hold them accountable for what they teach, and each one of us accountable for how we’ve spent our time here on earth.

  4. when Joyce Meyers changed from Life in the Word to Enjoying Everyday Life I knew something was wrong… Hillsong is just entertainment and these songs are the only ones being used now with church entetainment “worship bands” and the whole 40 Days of Purpose was totally lame and of the flesh….

  5. The Lord showed me He holds a amber of Evangelical on His altar, I asked what is it ? God said it is the “FULLY CONVINCED” evangelical teaching He wants to blow on… but we need to pray for it.. I feel this teaching of Mario is a beginning of this if we all ask God to blow this essential amber to glow again.. it is one of 3 God holds dear to.. others are fully convinced Liturgical and Charismatic… once all three are blown on , true Church will arise…

  6. Amen!

  7. Preaching should move a heart to the goodness of the LORD’s sacrifice for us as well as HIS Covenant for our benefit. If we as leaders never challenge sin with our sermons we are greasing the slope to hell to a society that is slipping into the flames of hell.

  8. Thank you for your posts. You have no idea how good it feels as a lay person to see you see what I see. If not for ministers on the Internet who teach truth, spiritual warfare. Repentance, worship of our God, stress 2 Chronicles 7:14 we would be in limbo. I have been so tired of going to church and watching what is supposed to be worship in song just be entertainment. Sing 3 songs, watch church activity video, then the sermon that doesn’t touch the fact that the United States is in trouble, our freedoms slipping away, our morals are not there, no regard for what God has said were abominations in His Word, the world is on fire but not for God. The US will lead the world straight into NWO. I have been a born again Christian for 42 years. I absolutely loved the real worship I saw, the people lifting hand praising, the teaching by pastors, the prophetic in the services, I was baptized in the Holy Spirit and began speaking in tongues without knowing anything about it. Some services were all worship. Now it is a ritual and I cannot force myself to go to that. We, the church, have been given authority and power by our so merciful God to rule, to decree, declare, to enjoy freedom in this country, yet it was taken over by evil, immorality, murdering babies, on and on. No one is taught to use the vote God gave us to keep Godly leaders so we can lead quiet, peaceable lives, men and women who follow the law of God and constitution. Now the church sits back with abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, our children indoctrinated in schools, colleges in ungodly things. Thank you for what you are doing, I only wish I could get pastors in my area to see, read what you are saying, i have tried sharing on the church sites with zero results. So I pray and cry out to the Lord for them to allow our God to have His way in services. All I can say is I am ever so grateful to you. God bless you in every way.

  9. Amen Mario,

Preachers need to stop walking the fence., preach the full gospel – repentance, being filled with the Holy Spirit, love but don’t compromise your Christian values. The bible tells us right from wrong. No more compromising
with worldly things like – accepting lifestyles of LBGTQ, BLM- ( domestic terrorism), etc. Do not side with these people…. they have an agenda, and by the way, I heard 30 million Christians didn’t vote in the last election, how sad is that!

    1. Norman,

If all those so called Christians would show up and vote Biblical values and continue to vote in EVERY election, the Left would be crushed once and for all in this nation!

  10. Amen! Thank you. We are getting uplifted and encouraged by each of your messages. We were introduced to you through Lance Wallnau. We are praying for your protection and guidance. John and Irene Hutchins

    1. Irene,

Same here! My wife an I watch Lance W. all the time and he had Mario on his YouTube channel and mentioned Mario’s blog. I didn’t realize Mario has had a blog since 2012. I just received his new book – Vessels of Fire & Glory.
Great book and I have only read the introduction, lol. I knew he was a good evangelist but didn’t know he has such great knowledge as to what’s going on here in the US, it’s history and and what the Lord is doing in these last days. Such a blessing.

  11. Praise Almighty God…….a fearless voice!

  12. Hi Mario, Yes yes, so right on. I asked the question / inquired of the Lord this week regarding what is being defunded in the church as we are seeing this happen with various govt entities. While in San Francisco in 2018 I had strong impression that the church was “going to go onto the block chain”, as a type of validation of our integrity. By the Spirit, I could actually “hear” the sound, the rhythm of the movement of the new digital currency in development, which was daunting in expanse. Have not shared this with many as was unsure of the source. I have had a sense for some time that money (currency) is tied to souls, and am convinced that where we put our money is very significant. I want to see Jesus to receive His just reward, more souls in His kingdom! They are coming! Just an ordinary girl in the service of the King. It is a privilege to contribute to this ministry. I bless you and Mechelle and team in the name of the Lord Jesus. Christine

  13. II Timothy 4, “I charge thee therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and His kingdom; preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts they shall heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth and shall be turned to fables. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, MAKE FULL PROOF OF THY MINISTRY.”
I Timothy 4, “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron.” Brother Mario, we have arrived at this prophetic moment. Rick Renner translates this way, “The time will come when they won’t put up with preachers who preach the truth.” In 46 years of ministry, I have never seen days like today. High levels of spiritual darkness, blindness, delusion, and oppression. More prayer than ever required for ministry of the Word. The sense of conflict in the heavenlies seems overwhelming. May it be spoken over this generation of preachers today: “Pastor, you preach the Word.” It is our command.

  14. When I read that last line by Charles Finney, Matthew 6:34 became clearer to me. The evil back then was magnified to a Spirit filled man such as Charles Finney. And today, Spirit filled Christians almost feel overwhelmed at the flood that comes toward us daily. But I suspect, if Christians in 1873 had seen the mess we have today in this country, it would more than overwhelm them. I just heard that a family was in Walmart w/o masks on and three policemen showed up and told them to get out. But last night, Tucker reported that a young mother with a little child was attacked by a screaming, vicious mob who jumped all over her car and screamed obscenities at her little girl and the 911 “dispatcher” refused to do anything, but told her to call City Hall. What country is this? Some are wondering why Trump has not been tougher on the anarchists. It seems like he is beginning to be. I hope so. We are under the tyranny of the Left anyway, and we elected him to get tough when needed, so to my thinking, he may as well do what is necessary to stop it, because we are losing America right now. Where is his prayer team? I hope they are on their faces, crying out to God to fill President Trump with His Spirit, from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet, and give him His wisdom and His strength, and to block all ungodly counsel from getting to him.

    1. Article IV, Section 4, The Constitution of the United States of America says:
“The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened), against domestic Violence.”

  15. My dear brother,

I am in total agreement with you. I have often said that I believe the pastors and the church is at fault for the conditions in this country. No fire in the pulpits or the heart of the preachers. We need the fire of the Holy Spirit in the pulpits and massive true repentance.

  17. Mario,
Is there a particular event or movement that, in your opinion, inaugurated this 25 years of shallow preaching, or is that just a general point when it seemed to to start going down hill? I ask because that time frame is peculiarly fitting in my own calling, and might even serve as a personal confirmation of some things for me. Thanks.

  18. Thank you Mario Murillo! No more compromising, tolerating and conforming to the world system; we keep our steady diet of the meat of the Word and the new wine of the Holy Spirit of God our Father and his Christ. When I read and sing the old hymns written in the late 1800’s, I stand in Awe of what they knew and sang about, that has been lost in today’s preaching and singing to itching ears and with mouths filled with mixtures instead of the pure River of Water of Life from the Throne of God and his Lamb.

  19. Amen Amen. God bless all that you are saying and doing. Thank you thank you for your boldness to tell it like it is. Jim Letts

  20. Now that we’ve heard the truth, what is anyone going to do about it? We are astute at pointing out what is wrong, who is wrong, what needs to be done, and what’s up ahead. Is anyone going to do something about it by the Spirit of God in the next few moments? In an hour? Tomorrow, maybe? Must we wait for Heaven to fall on us? Remember the phrase ‘paralysis of analysis’? Now the paralysis of the pandemic. We have all we need today, June 26th, 2020. Filled with the Spirit, full of Bible Scriptures, Good News Gospel, Mercy and Compassion, a bottle of Anointing Oil, and a desire to give people hope and an Answer. Now, say “God enable me, and reach someone today for you.” Get your masks on and go do it! I am.

  21. Amen… preachers of America have done like King Ahaz
“Traded an altar that DEMANDS confrontation with GOD for a lifeless and powerless sinners prayer.”
    2 Kings 16:10-15

  22. All needed to be said,I am sure, true gospel message that calls us to salvation through Jesus also calls us to follow Him,obey Him,and to stop saying its all fine, excepting everything as ok. My message to the church is repent, return to your first love, stop polluting and mudding up the water so the sheep cannot get to it.come out of the world, and display Jesus, brightly, and walk in a manner wirty of your calling. I have been seeing some people so scared now to stand up for righteousness, the kingdom of God is light,no racism there,or any other sin.Jesus return is soon, rise up and preach against the power of satan,God is going to have a spotless bride

  23. Bravo! I have shared your posts with my pastors on several occasions. They do preach the Blood of Jesus, repentance and salvation or I would be praying for another church to attend. I am a bit concerned, though, that they are tip-toeing so lightly with their sermons. Our congregation is multi-cultural, which I love, and I think the pastors are dealing with a lot. They never talk politics in their sermons, which in previous times I probably would have agreed with, but now it isn’t party against party… it is darkness and light, good against evil … we are fighting for our lives as a nation. I want them to stand up for us and empower us with Godly boldness. I pray that the Lord gives all of us, sheep and our pastors, the chutzpah to stand up and fight before it is too late.

  24. Amen, Brother Mario, thank you for your heart for preachers and desire to see the fire of God fall in the pulpits once again. The true gospel must be preached without fear and favor of man.

We would like an update on your rescheduling of tent revivals in California.
We’re believing with you for God to open those doors very soon. How do we get updates as we have called your office several times, leaving a message, but have not received a call back. We have also tried to contact you through email. If there is a better way to contact you, please let us know.

God’s richest blessings on you, Mario, as you hear and speak God’s Word!

  25. The responsibility of the ‘body of Christ’ is to be the body of Christ, that is following and obeying the mind of Christ. If the mind and body are disunited, you automatically have division and dysfunction.

    That is why Jesus said:

Jn 14:23 “If a man loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 He who does not love me does not keep my words; and the word which you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me”.

So the body must be obedient to the mind and obey the mind’s commands. (cf Deut 6) Otherwise there is no relationship between Jesus and ‘his body’. We have to be emulating and practising what Jesus practises, otherwise this ‘body’ will not be doing the Will of God. We will be serving a different master and mind.

Therefore we can not not just believe, we must also act and practise what Jesus did and practised, otherwise there is a disconnect between us and Christ. Which means now, the body of Christ must first and foremost reconcile itself with Jesus, his life, his teachings, his narrative. Not to, is living in sin.

It is the responsibility of all races to follow Jesus’ example and transcend the concept of race when there is only the human race in the eyes of God. We were all created as God’s sons and daughters.
It is Satan who wants to divide us into categories and pit one against the other.

Throughout history families have fought against families, tribe against tribe, nation against nation. Satan is just using race as a pretext to sow division.

People without love will persecute and bully anyone different from them, even their own brother and sister. Cain killed his brother Abel. Genocide and democide historically has been one race killing its own race. The issue is hatred, fear, greed, an unrighteous desire to control others, and to have what is not ours, hence the Ten Commandments, a universal set of Laws to live by.

Why America and the West is in trouble and experiencing all these problems is because we believed, but we didn’t embody the Word, and God’s love, and our societies are a reflection of that failure.

Taking action, doing is what makes substance. You can not imagine or wish a cake or a roast dinner into existence. You have to do something, you have to ‘create it’, as God created us and the universe. Without practising and becoming the embodiment of the Word, we are just building our lives and our society on sand:

Mt 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into ‘practice’ is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” -[‘PUTS THEM INTO PRACTICE’]

John 17:20 “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; 21 that ‘they all may be one’, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also ‘may be one in Us’, that the world may believe that You sent Me. 22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that ‘they may be one’ just as ‘We are one’: 23 I in them, and You in Me; ‘that they may be made perfect in one’, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me”.

John 13:12 “When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them”.

Christians to be Christians must follow Jesus example, and come together as the body of Christ; unite, reconcile, act, and then a great ‘Transformation of America’ and the world will take place, and then the Great Commission will be accomplished, as Jesus will then have his body working in unity, harmony and synchronicity. The hand will obey the mind’s command. Instead of hurting others, it will serve others, as Jesus demonstrated and taught with his own body.

God will not accept us just believing in Him and Christ, He needs us to act like Jesus, who came to be that example for fallen man to follow.

Maybe our dream is to work for a certain company or go to to a certain university and we get accepted there. Is that the end of the story. No, our boss or our faculty will expect us to perform and bring results according to the standards and expectations it has for its employees or students. Failure is not an option. God also has high expectations, if we want to be on his team and be co-creators with him.

Salvation means to be restored back to the original purpose we were created for, becoming one with God – Mt 5:48. It doesn’t mean existing in a perpetual state of sin and requiring forgiveness all the time, like something that needs to be constantly fixed. Do you want a bucket that has holes in it, or a vacuum cleaner that keeps breaking down.

If you take your car to the mechanic to get fixed, you don’t want it coming back half fixed. We are quick to recognise imperfection in others and in the things of the physical world. Do you think God wants us to be imperfect and only functioning at some minimum standard. No He does not, that is why Jesus gave us a Commandment to be perfect as our Heavenly Father is perfect, because that is the original blueprint and purpose we have. Jesus himself being perfect told us what God’s original intention for us is. That being God’s original purpose, and His ideal of creation.

Whether we achieve that or not, it is our responsibility to try til the day we die.

Mt 18:18 “Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven”.

Luke 12:49 “I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled!”

Would that people were taking responsibility for God’s Word and living it, so then based on practising the Word, they would automatically recognise Jesus and have a relationship with him, therefore recognising Jesus through their practising the Word, leading to ‘reconciliation’ with God.

If you love a particular musician and you work hard to practise their songs or instrument, when you meet them, will not your bond be stronger than a person who loves them but hasn’t learnt their music or to play their instrument. The more you invest in something or someone, the greater the love there is, and the sense of fulfilment and happiness.

Today, Christians must unite the body of Christ, come together, and through that unity, (Jn 17:20-23) because a house divided can not stand, we will be able to save our nation and make it whole.

America and the world is still to achieve greatness. That will only happen when we embody the ‘Two Great Commandments’, that being the formula and prerequisite for greatness, and oneness with God.

  26. There are many in the older generation that have been hidden in spiritual caves and under spiritual rocks. Those who came to the Lord later in life, and embraced the fire of the burden of the heart of the Father. I believe it will be the zeal of the youth, along with the wisdom of the older generation that will become a mighty weapon in the hand of the Lord in coming days…

A tri-generational army that has been tested in the fires of cleansing who understand the times and seasons we are in, like the sons of Issachar… there are messengers and leadership in the wings that will soon deal with the status-quo, church as usual scenario. They will come with fire in their bellies and truth on their tongues. They will be 20 years old and they will be 80 years old.

They will not come from theological seminaries or Bible colleges, but they will be the nameless faceless as the apostles were. They will break the mold of complacency and shake those drunk on the wine of indifference. Like Gideon and David’s armies, they will be hand picked by the Father and anointed to be fire breathing world changers. The timing of their their appearance will coincide with the unveiling of God’s heavenly blueprint which will alter the course and direction of a wayward Church and separate the vile from the precious and the righteous from the pretender.

The Church must first undergo a pruning before she can become a vessel fit for service. May those who have been chosen for such a time as this, have one hand on their sword and another on a trowel (Nehemiah) as they will be called to uproot and tear down, destroy and overthrow (before God will allow) building and planting…(Jer. 1:10) Fixing a broken Church is tantamount to fixing a broken world…all we need is a people ready to face the backlash and persecution that will result in speaking the burden of the heart of the Father…and the backlash will come mostly from the Church!

Lord, raise up your champions who will do mighty exploits in your name, and strengthen their resolve as the darkness ensues. This is not for the nominal Christian nor the faint of heart. It will require absolute holiness and purity, righteousness and justice, character and integrity. Many will not be willing to pay the price when the fecal matter hits the oscillating rotor.
