Gavin Newsom ordered churches not to sing and worship. I can’t think of a worse idea than to stop praise and worship because Gavin Newsom told you to. It’s time  to wake up to the sad truth that California has declared war on the church. They were aggressively oppressing Christians in California long before Covid 19.

This latest travesty is just using the Pandemic as an excuse. This is just a test to see how the public reacts to Christian persecution. If we do not vehemently reject this tyranny, it will embolden Democrat leaders in other states to do the same thing. It is time to resist.

Doesn’t the Bible tell us to obey them no matter what? Absolutely not. And it is shocking how many believers do not know their Bible or have been given false teaching.

There is no verse in the Bible that tells you to obey evil government or laws. And again, if we don’t realize that now, it will soon be too late.

Let me prove to you beyond any doubt that the Bible tells us what we must do in the face of wicked government and laws.

First, I will expose a pathetic heresy that many believers commonly accept as truth. This is a widespread excuse for submitting when we should disobey.

Here is an example of someone who wrote me while under the influence of this false teaching:

“Out of curiosity, how do you justify your argument against obeying the government when you read Romans 13:1-7. The government Paul was talking about was even more oppressive than anything we can imagine. You could truly be martyred for your faith under the Roman government. And, what was Paul’s response? Did he call for governmental reform? Did he call for us to protest the government? Did he demand his rights and call on the government to recognize his rights? None of the above, he said, in the face of a brutal government, to obey. He didn’t say obey if your rights are recognized, he said obey. The church of today has to realize that the government is not our arena as Christians. Never, in the history of the church, has God used the government to bring about change.”


This defense of submission to evil government is riddled with error and falsehoods. Here are my responses to selected quotes:

1.You could truly be martyred for your faith under the Roman government.” First the writer tells us to obey evil laws, but then mentions martyrs. They never would have been martyred had they not broken the law by being Christians.

2. Then he asks, “Did (Paul) call for governmental reform? Did he call for us to protest the government? Did he demand his rights and call on the government to recognize his rights? None of the above…” The truth is, Paul did all of the above. “Paul said to them, “They have beaten us openly, uncondemned Romans, and have thrown us into prison. And now do they put us out secretly? No indeed! Let them come themselves and get us out” (Acts 16:37).

3. And finally, the zinger—the heresy that has sidelined the Body of Christ in the hour when we are most needed: “The church of today has to realize that the government is not our arena as Christians. Never, in the history of the church, has God used the government to bring about change.” Totally untrue. William Wilberforce was a Christian who used his faith in Jesus to abolish slavery in England. In fact, believers throughout history have created child labor laws, health regulations, and have exposed injustice, and corruption. It is safe to say that Christians are more responsible for influencing government, bringing about reform by forcing laws to be changed, and standing up for justice, than any other group in history.

So how did this writer get it so wrong? By doing what so many do. Isolating one set of verses, taking them out of context, and arriving at a conclusion that looks holy, but is in fact, pure and simple fear.

Let’s look at the verses that have been violated:

“Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. Therefore, whoever resists the authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have praise from the same. For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. Therefore, you must be subject, not only because of wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. Render therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor (Romans 13:1-7).

It seems to say that we are to honor government in every form, right? Wrong. To demonstrate what Paul is saying I offer this example. Say some parents leave the house, and leave the oldest child in charge. The child is given strict instructions not to open the door for anyone, except for a postal messenger whom they are expecting to deliver an important package that day.

The parents tell the child, “He will have blonde hair. He is wearing blue jeans and a white shirt. Don’t let anyone else in.” So later, a man with black hair, a blue shirt, and black slacks knocks on the door claiming to be the messenger with the package. Do they let him in? Of course not.

Lost in all the quoting of this verse on submission to government is the most important part: The description of the ruling authority. The Bible tells us what they are wearing! Look at the description:

1.They are not a terror to good works. Any government that terrorizes the innocent is not of God. How can you say that Hitler was God’s will for Germany? Hitler and other tyrants are in fact the ones being warned that there were God appointed governments who would destroy them: “But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil.”  That is why the just powers of the world rose up and destroyed the Nazis.

2. They praise good works. Authorities that are endorsed by God do not hate or oppose Christian activity. They are the ones who—even if they are not Christian themselves—do not insult soul winning or fight the work of God. They are the cops, teachers, politicians who are glad that children are getting out of gangs and off of drugs.

3. You must be subject for the sake of conscience. When it becomes tricky, is when government is a mixture of right and wrong. Jesus said of the Pharisees, “Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, but do not do” (Matthew 23:3).

Do what they say, but don’t partake of their hypocrisy. Watch them for that moment when they cross the line and come between you and your God.  Just as our conscience should drive us to obey the law, we should also know when our conscience tells us not to obey an evil law.

Here’s when Peter reached that tipping point, speaking to those very same Pharisees: “So they called them and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:18-20).

And again, in Acts 5:29, “Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men.””

God not only does not endorse evil government: He will have no part in it. “Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—a throne that brings on misery by its decrees? The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death” (Psalm 94:20). There is your answer. A corrupt throne (government) cannot be allied with God.

The Amplified Bible (1974) puts it this way: “Can a throne of destruction be allied with You, one which frames and devises mischief by decree [under the sacred name of law]?”  How much clearer can it be than this?  It proves that laws can be evil and cannot be allied with God.

In fact, evil laws are the worst form of sin. They provide legitimacy to evil.  Matthew Henry said, “Iniquity is daring enough even when human laws are against it, which often prove too weak to give an effectual check to it; but how insolent, how mischievous, is it when it is backed by a law! Iniquity is not the better, but much the worse, for being enacted by law; nor will it excuse those that practice it to say that they did but do as they were bidden.”

Notice how at the end, Henry says we can’t use the excuse that we were just obeying the law.  That is why Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”

The laws being created by Democrats, using the coronavirus as an excuse, are far worse than the virus itself because, unlike the virus, those new laws become permanent.  It is time for the church to wake up and take action, beginning with voting the evildoers out of office and quit calling our submission a godly thing, when it is just a cowardly thing.

    It is not only California that has that regulation, it is Oregon too. I was looking so much to going back to church–the singing, the socialization and hearing a sermon in person.
    Well sermon in person was not bad, but damn no singing. Communion from some little prepared cups with the wafer on top. Didn’t get to do the wafer, cause I never did figure out how to get it out of its wrapper, Do believe that Christ knew my intentions were there.
    Rows are socially distanced, so I’m not sure what it was but I was not the only one who said “it felt like I was sitting in a room full of zombies”
    I guess I will go back to listening to Robby and you on Sunday nights.

  4. Perhaps this is a day when we must put our faith on full display outside of the four walls of earthly church buildings, as Jesus did. I have met in local park with several friends and had ‘church’. Talk to people, share your faith. Who knows- you may find yourself saving the lost, healing broken hearts, and helping oppressed go free. It is a new day.

  5. God loves to hear the praises of his people. Enter into his gates with Thanksgiving and into his courts with praise. This is exactly how God wanted our worship to start, singing his praises. Can you imagine David who wrote the Psalms not singing? You are so correct Mario. This is another test for the church. A silly test to easily violate. Telling someone they can’t sing is like saying don’t talk. Last I checked, this is America, land of the free and home of the brave. Well church time to brave up. Time to get those vocal chords a great workout. Time to show God who you serve. Thanks for your great stand Mario. People are starting to get pretty tired of the Democrats shoving this stuff down our throats. If it continues there will be a pushback and it won’t be pretty.   8. The modern praise and worship at many churches is so awful banning it is probably doing us all a favor. I used to like praise and worship, but in my opinion it has really gone downhill the last 20 years or so. Maybe I am old, but I really think quite a bit of church worship is awful.

    This guy is overstepping what he can do but he is not wrong about churches spreading the Covid. I never go to church but went with someone to a “Jeremiah Johnson” meeting about a month ago. He has a prophecy out that Trump can decree the end of the Covid.

    The minute I walked in the door people were sticking their hands in my face like they were making a statement that they weren’t afraid of the Covid. The service was full and required you to endure an hour of shouting and worship music that was a combination of shouting and unanointed performance. Then there was the preaching.

    We both came down with the Covid a few days later. There is no doubt we caught it at the church service because neither of us go anywhere else and the timing pointed to that service. By chance I ran into a guy that used to cut my hair a row in front of me. There is a good chance he caught it and spread it to quite a few people along with many others in the congregation that night.

    I am not real concerned about the Covid, but it was so unusual for me to end up at that church service and catch the Covid. I am sure God orchestrated me catching it at a church to make me more aware of it.

    The reality of Covid may be that we are all going to catch it anyway. This is no big deal for most people, but there is no doubt in my mind that churches are contributing to the spread of Covid and they have many high risk people of their own. I would be the first to ignore the governor, but I don’t think he is wrong about churches, particularly worship services spreading Covid. The responsibility of that falls on the pastor or whoever is in charge at these churches.

        I am not mad at God for giving me the virus. A few headaches and some inconvenience was pretty much the extent of it. I am blessed to have had it a month ago.         Maybe you can provide your megagenius reason the virus won’t continue through the rest of the population? There is no cure and it doesn’t seem to be seasonal. A safe vaccine may be years away. I am curious as to how I am the ignoramus here.

        You slander me for telling you the truth. The church being a hub for transmitting the disease while crying persecution and fake news isn’t going to do us or these churches any favors. People worried about the virus will attend these kind of churches less, not more. Nobody wants to go to a Covid fest and it is a terrible witness. They may lose a lot of high risk parishioners to the virus if there is not at least a discussion by the pastor about taking precautions.

    2. God designed the human body to develop antibodies to fight viruses it is exposed to. You can develop antibodies from being exposed one of two ways. The second one is by vaccine which you will require if you were denied the first one.

  9. I am an elder in a local church, and we already have disagreements as to whether or not we should wear masks in our meetings. I see nothing about masks in scripture. But, there is a lot about singing praise to the Lord! I expect that some in the congregation will say we have to obey Governor Nuisance in this regard, too. Some people may leave the church no matter what we do. But I say, “We must obey God rather than men.”

Surely Mario is misquoting, misunderstood…something. How could this happen, banning worship, restricting the rights of Christians.   11. The enemy has always been a master at dividing those who claim to believe the WORD OF GOD, first and foremost. Daily, we are distracted by not only the things of the world but for the true Christian, our understanding and beliefs are drawn into question. WHY? Satan used this tactic on Jesus in the desert, why not us ? I must declare that there have been times that I moved out in “FAITH” and the consequences were devastating! What did I learn? One thing stood out – that though I did what I thought was GOOD, my flesh may have prevailed and the “sin” had it’s affects. BUT- more importantly was the SOLID FACT and result that GOD took that which the enemy meant for EVIL and made it GOOD. For God knows our hearts and will move the universe for His Divine plans and purposes. How will I respond in regard to all that is happening? If it’s a blessing, if it’s fun, if it honors God, if it helps support families and nurture children-then it’s probably next on the chopping block in Sunny California and many other states. I love that Trump is purposely making a special effort to salute America on Independence Day, in spite of the loony left, who must just be seething. Right now, it seems like there are two Americas, like we are living two different lives at the same time.

Murillo neglected to mention another instance where Paul (in the words of the initial letter-writer) “demand[ed] his rights and call[ed] on the government to recognize his rights,” namely, Paul’s defense before Festus in Acts 25: “But if the charges brought against me by these Jews are not true, no one has the right to hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar!”

    And again, the letter-writer’s claim that “[n]ever, in the history of the church, has God used the government to bring about change” is easily falsified by the actions of Constantine, the first Christian emperor of Rome. His Edict of Milan legalized Christianity in the Roman empire and ended the horrible persecutions that Christians endured under his predecessors.

  17. Not sure I followed your argument here because this verse still stands in 1 Peter 2:13-16
    “Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.”
    It’s really up to every man’s conscience if they feel led to agree with you that these verses do not apply in this case, and certainly we are not judge those that are motivated by what they believe God would have them do.

      2. That is a specious argument. I’m not going to dignify that horrible question with a direct answer.
        The thought process that ultimately equates an order by the governor (not passed by a legislative body) to state sponsored genocide is cause to call to remembrance the exceeding great and precious promises we have in Christ.
        Pray for the governor, pray for the grace to pass through this trial.
        I re-read my earlier comments and was wishing to withdraw them but if you think not singing in church is the same as the holocaust then let me keep the dialogue open! What am I missing? We have verses in the Bible that command us to abide under the law and when so needed we have Biblical examples and Biblical empowerment to know when we ought obey God and not man. I pray for wisdom to know when that is.
        When I go to church to sing. But not because it’s preventing Holocaust.

I would Like to make a Point some may agree with, some may not but it is worthy of consideration, it also pertains to Romans 13… Not all Countries are the same, some are ruled by Dictators and some are Republic in nature.. In America it is a Government for the people by the People under consent of the Governed.. In America the Established Authority is the Highest Law of the Land Our founding Documents which contain our Laws..

    This is the Authority established by God for this nation and it was written by Godly men.. No one is above these Laws, Not even the President.. That is how we know they are the Authority Established by God. Only God Himself is above these Laws.. So when Governors Violate these Laws they should be held to account by the Governed, by We the People.They Work for us, They serve us.. In Fact it is every Americans Duty to hold our Representatives to the Authority of our Constitutional Laws and God Given Rights..
