Kentucky clerk who denied gay marriage licenses released from jail

Kim Davis, the Kentucky clerk locked up for refusing to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, was released from jail on Tuesday — as her case also drew the personal attention of two presidential candidates.

Davis was greeted by a crowd of singing and cheering supporters as she exited the jail. They sang “Amazing Grace” and “God Bless America,” as her attorney vowed Davis would be back to work “this week.”

The order for her release came from U.S. District Judge David Bunning, the same judge who initially jailed the Rowan County clerk last Thursday on a contempt of court charge. But Bunning lifted that order Tuesday. He said the court is “satisfied” that since last week, the clerk’s office has been issuing marriage licenses “to all legally eligible couples” — those licenses have been handled by Davis’ deputy clerks.

At the same time, Bunning directed Davis not to “interfere in any way” with the marriage licenses now being issued by her office.

“If Defendant Davis should interfere in any way with their issuance, that will be considered a violation of this Order and appropriate sanctions will be considered,” he said in the order. Bunning is the son of former Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning.

More on this…

  • Why Mike Huckabee is standing with Kentucky clerk Kim Davis

Her legal counsel did not say whether Davis had any intention to defy the courts.

Rather, attorney Mat Staver said: “She loves God, she loves people, she loves her work — and she will not betray any of those three.”

He said Davis will not violate her “conscience,” and said the court order “did not resolve the underlying issue.” He reiterated Davis’ request for an “accommodation” to remove her name from gay marriage certificates. “Kim still is asking for that today,” he said.

The decision from Bunning came down just before Davis received jailhouse visits from Republican presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz. They were ushered into the building shortly after the judge’s order was issued, as was Davis’ husband, Joe Davis.

“She was willing to go to jail for what she believed,” Huckabee said, as he accompanied Davis and her attorney out of the jail. He also tweeted:

Davis’ stand has become a political lightning rod in the 2016 race, rallying social conservatives while drawing the scorn of Democrats; some Republican presidential candidates also have suggested she went too far in refusing marriage licenses.

But 2016 candidates like Cruz and Huckabee, a former Baptist minister, have used her case to highlight the issue of religious freedom and reach out to evangelical Christians.

KIM DAVIS: SPEAK UP OR PREPARE FOR THE REHABILITATION

HERES WHY

ASHLAND, Ky. — A county clerk who, through her defiance of a federal court order to issue marriage licenses to gay couples, became a national symbol of religious opposition to same-sex marriage was jailed Thursday after a federal judge here declared her in contempt of court.

KIM DAVIS: SPEAK UP OR PREPARE FOR THE COMING REHABILITATION

By Mario Murillo

The dangerous cougar–ignored by the park ranger–made its way to the city.  The ranger said, “It’s a job for law enforcement.”  The policeman let the lion into the neighborhood because he thought; it’s a job for the ranger.  The man—whose child was terrorized by the cougar–was vilified for stopping the animal.

Kim Davis is a federal employee right?  She should enforce the law right?  Wrong!

Perhaps a better analogy is this quote from Martin Niemöller a famous protestant leader who opposed Hitler and spent his last 7 years in a concentration camp:

“First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Radical feminists, uber-liberals and gay activists have to make this about marriage equality when it has nothing to do with equality.  This is the ongoing march of tyranny.  A march that should have been stopped–and would have been stopped–way up the line were it not for cowardly pastors, conservative politicians, and all Americans who claimed to value the constitution and the rule of law but did not speak out.

Had the government concocted a law that required all couples to recite a Christian prayer before they were allowed to marry, I would be equally outraged.

I would see it as activist law created to oppress a certain group for the express purpose of removing their freedom and expanding control.  That is precisely what is happening here but in this case the purpose is to checkmate Christians into situations that will justify their arrest.

The gay marriage law is a terrible law that should equally horrify Christians and gays because of how it was spawned.   It was created by a Supreme Court intimidated into breaking the law by Barack Obama.  Obama does not care about gays—he cares about power.

Kim Davis refused to enforce federal law out of conscience. I find it hilariously disingenuous that secular progressives are condemning her for this.  They condemn her for not enforcing federal law while they cheer San Francisco for disobeying federal immigration law.   At least, in Kim Davis’ case nobody was murdered because of her act By the way, why isn’t anyone putting the Mayor of San Francisco in jail for contempt?  What about arresting all of the civic leaders of all the sanctuary cities?

Not only this, but federal immigration law can pass constitutional muster—the concoction that came out of the Supreme Court on marriage cannot.

And You Christians who feel that “we cannot force God’s law on Gays” have it totally wrong as well.  This has nothing to do with Christians forcing anyone to do anything. The only person being forced to do anything is Kim Davis and she is being forced to violate her faith and her constituents who elected her because of her Christian values.

It is silly to say she is giving us a bad name.  It is all of the Christian appeasers that are doing the real harm.  Charles Spurgeon said, “It is a very ill omen to hear a wicked world clap it hands and say well done to a Christian man.”

It is also silly to say that she can just get another job…do we just keep retreating?

The key to all of this is that Kim Davis understands what is coming next.  That is the big deal!  Obama and his toady secular progressives are not done forcing Christians into situations that silences and diminishes their rights.  The overreach continues.

Here is a final thought:  The attorney who represents the State of Oregon that prosecuted believers Melissa and Aaron Klein for refusing to bake a cake for a gay wedding said, “Our goal was not to put them out of business but to rehabilitate them.  “Rehabilitate,” get it?  They want society to think Christianity is a disease of the mind.

Kim Davis took a stand against the coming rehabilitation.  What about you?
