WHY TRUE PREACHING MATTERS NOW MORE THAN EVER

“I sought for the greatness and genius of America in her commodious harbors and her ample rivers, and it was not there: in her fertile land, and boundless prairies, and it was not there. Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great” (Alexis de Tocqueville, 1835).

Comte De Tocqueville was one of the brightest minds of his time: a French aristocrat, diplomat, political scientist, and historian. He cut through the veneer and identified preaching as the prime source of our genius. Think of that. He pinpointed the fire in our pulpits as the source of our greatness!

Our recent blog, about the feeble response of Christian leaders to the present madness in America, was widely accepted by believers, and just as widely rejected by leaders—celebrity leaders. Perhaps Tocqueville’s quote may help you understand why I hold them responsible for our national debacle. My severity toward them is not because I have a low opinion of pastors, it is because I have a high opinion of preaching. Like Alexis de Tocqueville, I believe anointed preaching to be the true source of our greatness, and bad preaching to be the true source of our weakness.

Preaching was never supposed to be like this, but it has been shallow for the last 25 years. It was supposed to convict, convince, equip, and launch disciples into secular society. Instead, modern preaching echoed what the world was already saying. Instead of bringing powerful Christians to a hurting world, these preachers brought the dysfunction of the world to believers. Modern preaching did not equip, but instead, it enabled. It did not utterly denounce sin—it negotiated with it, creating birth-defective converts.

The American church de Tocqueville encountered in 1835 had fire in the pulpit. It is because we do not have that fire in our pulpits today, that we have fires in our streets. Because preachers choose to tell soothing stories instead of proclaiming Truth, our young people believe lies and honor truly stupid ideas and follow truly evil leaders.

1 Peter 3:15 says, “But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” Was there ever a hope, in our current church climate of creating sanctified hearts who could give answers?

I stand accused of being too hard on American preachers. I am rejected for placing too high a responsibility for our current disaster on their shoulders. Some of their whining baffles me. Celebrity preachers cannot have it both ways. They are the ones who accepted the lofty praise, superstar status, and wealth. Like athletes who got the big contract—these preachers were expected to perform. But when it came to saving a nation from wickedness, they were a bitter let down.  You don’t call yourself “the anointed vessel for this hour”—and then fizzle, in this, America’s darkest hour.

Charles Finney wrote, “Brethren, our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits. If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation.” (The Decay of Conscience, 1873)

Perhaps the only cure for such preaching is to depopularize it and defund it. Perhaps the fault lies as much with the fans of these preachers. In my book, Vessels of Fire and Glory, I wrote about the Contaminated Crowd. They are described in glaring detail in 2 Timothy 4:2-4, “Proclaim the Word. Keep your sense of urgency in season and out of season. Reprove, admonish, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not tolerate sound instruction, but having ears itching (for something pleasing), they will gather to themselves teachers chosen to satisfy their own lusts, and will turn aside from hearing the Truth and wander off into man-made myths.”

There is a reason that so much preaching today is festooned with props, smoke, emotionalism and entertainment. Small wonder that the slightest manifestation of the Spirit is touted as a miracle. It is no surprise that repentance is seldom if ever called for. The devil has seen to it that the American Church was totally unprepared for the multiple onslaughts unleashed against it in 2020.

And yet, there is a glorious sign on the horizon! There is a hint that actual preaching may return. There are young men and women displaying dangerous tendencies, such as reading revival history. Young leaders are disenchanted with the attraction-church model. They are asking threatening questions, desiring old ways—the ways that dislodge devils and release true signs and wonders.

God is stirring hearts, disrupting plans and driving young leaders to the kind of fire we need—the fire that can make America good and great, once again.

Vessels of Fire and Glory

Vessels of Fire and Glory is Mario’s newest book. It reached number one on Amazon among all Spirit-filled books. John Kilpatrick who led the Pensacola Revival said this after he read Vessels of Fire and Glory: “As I read the manuscript for Mario Murillo’s new book, Vessels of Fire and Glory, I said to myself, “Finally!” Mario has measured the church and the nation in this season and did not hold anything back. His honesty is like the sun rising inside a dark cave. This release is a paradox—it is sobering and refreshing; it is symptoms and the cure. I believe this revivalist has penned a treatise that should be in the hands of all who lead the work of God.”

 Edgewise

Here is a book about the end times with a totally different approach. It does not focus on how the world will end but on how to live as the curtain comes down on humanity. Powerful, practical, and encouraging.

Critical Mass

Critical Mass is the best-selling book Mario Murillo has ever written. It has been acclaimed as a classic on how to pray for, surrender to, and sustain revival. It is required reading in many colleges and training centers.

Christians who hate Trump

There are Christians who hate Trump.  Let’s call it for what it is: hate.  It is their hate—which is very strange for those who name the name of Jesus—that dulls their ability to see the inaccuracy of their comments and their myopic views.

One sanctimonious ranting Christian said, “There’s nothing Biblical about Trump.”  Actually, there’s nothing Biblical about that statement.  The prophet Daniel served Nebuchadnezzar.  Daniel recognized the role that this pagan king played in God’s unfolding drama.  The church’s ability to work with Trump is totally Biblical.

Now, I must clarify something, lest I incur the wrath of Trump supporters.  I am not calling Trump a pagan king—I’m sure he is much more moral than his enemies realize—I am saying that if Daniel could work with the Nebuchadnezzar how much more can we work with the Donald.

I have tried very hard to figure out what causes believers to hate Trump.  Our side won a long overdue and miraculous victory at the polls, and yet these believers choose to aid and abet the other side.  Is it because their favorite “Christian” didn’t win? Is it a case of sour grapes? They didn’t require any President to be a squeaky clean pastor, until Trump.

Yes, his tweets can be a bit much.  And okay, President Trump is not as smooth as Reagan…but, we don’t need smooth right now.

Here is something else that is really strange, (hypocritical is more like it): why didn’t these guardians of morality speak out against Obama?  Franklin Graham was attacked for questioning Obama’s Christian Faith.  They told him not to judge a brother.  Hold that thought as we explore another question…

How could you not question Obama’s Christianity?  Obama begged the question by dropping the Christian-card whenever it suited him (something Trump never does).   Meanwhile, Barack fought for same sex marriage, late term abortion, gave billions to Iran, and was the most Biblically hostile President in our history.

So why do so many Christian leaders—who said it was wrong to judge Obama—judge Trump?

Trump is not a pastor.  He is a businessman who loves America.  As far as his faith?  I am not qualified to determine his spiritual depth, since I’ve never had the chance to meet the man. But there are many photos of Christian leaders laying hands on the President, praying for him, and he is cooperating.

“He is like Hitler and the church is being fooled,” said another comment.  At this time, those of you who are wearing tinfoil hats, please remove them, and listen.  Hitler never had 98% of the media against him.  Trump has never called for a new constitution.  Hitler never tried to protect Israel.  I could go on and on.

Maybe if Trump had addressed the March for Life.  Maybe if he had chosen an on fire born-again Vice President.  Maybe if he had rescinded executive orders that banned federal funds from Christian organizations.  Maybe if he overruled the Johnson Amendment that banned the free speech of pastors.  Maybe if he had moved the American Embassy to Jerusalem, and shown himself to be a true supporter of Israel.  Maybe if he had put someone on the Supreme Court who helped Christian bakers to exercise their right to freedom of religion.  Maybe then you would support him.  Oh wait…he did all those things…

God has done a miracle and the enemy wants to make short work of the amazing breakthroughs we are witnessing by dividing the church.  Instead of being a religious outlier you should be thanking God, praying for and supporting the President. And voting for righteousness, and against the enemies of freedom.

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in high office, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dedication (to God). 3 This (is) good and acceptable before God our Savior, 4 Who wishes all men to be saved and to come to a full knowledge of (the) Truth. – 1 Timothy 2:1-4

Because you support Trump

Because I support Trump, they stopped helping us win souls.  Funds for winning souls pulled?  Because I stand for Trump?  Won’t get involved in a soul winning crusade because of Trump?  That’s an ugly truth.  In some cases, they have allowed their hatred of Trump to trump their love for lost souls.

We got nothing but support in Texas.   But, resistance from other places drained and distracted us, forcing Houston and San Antonio to be cancelled.

Some who promised help, and have helped for years, have stopped.   Others falsely accused me of talking about Trump all the time.  Did you know that only 5% of my blogs have featured Trump?  Most of my posts deal with spiritual warfare, sound doctrine, revival, and reports of our work.

Leaders have said they can’t be a part of rallies that are political.  This shows me they have not been to any of our outreaches.  In the tent, I rarely, if ever mention Trump.  Not because I am afraid, but because I am consumed by the message of Christ for lost souls and miracles for those who need healing.  In a tent full of hurting people there’s no time for anything else.

And by the way, shame on you if that is why you didn’t get involved.

Others claim youth are turned off by my message.  The notion that youth stay away because I support our President is totally false.  They are not staying away.  If fact, we have a crisis of opportunity.  Our youth are hungry for God.  What we do have is a critical shortage of workers.

There are thousands of millennials out there connecting with what I am saying. Here’s just one sample of emails I receive:

“Every word you speak always touches my soul and spirit in a way I cannot explain. I’m a millennial head over heels in love with Jesus and laying low like how you speak about. I don’t comment on these things, but I have to tell you that us young ones are the Joshua generation! We have been sick of our parents and whomever, sinning and lying and complaining and leading us away from the truth…from God…from Jesus. We’ve had enough, and we are here to serve the Lord in love and be nothing like our ancestors. The separation has begun. I look forward to every post you write!” -Love and prayers from fellow brothers and sisters in FL

Now here is a comment from a “Christian” with the mindset that opposes our soul winning.  He calls my support for Trump “the greatest blasphemy.”  He even issues his condemnation in the form of a prayer!  “And here before you, my Lord, are the ones who have engraved their names in testimony to their blasphemies; their turning away from and against defense of the meek, the powerless, the peaceful, those who love others of your flock regardless of their name or color or race or gender. Mine is not to judge; it is only to weep for them. For they follow a false prophet, and I am saddened they have been steered from your path and then evangelize it as if it was your gospel. It is the greatest of blasphemies.”-John

If these timid souls really cared about the poor and the defenseless, they join us in the inner city feeding and clothing the poor instead of pontificating from the bleachers.

We speak out because we understand why America must remain strong, free and under the rule of law.   This pseudo-pacifism—that would make a hippie blush—is what got in this mess in the first place.  It was the church’s silence that brought us to the brink.

So, I went to the Lord and He gave me Proverbs 20:3 “A man of honor withdraws his foot from strife.”  And that is exactly what I doing…I am withdrawing.   Because I am withdrawing from strife, I will not mention any names, so please don’t bother asking.  Because I am withdrawing you will never hear me talk about this again.  I am only telling you because people deserve to know what happened.

This cancellation is especially frustrating because there are many who do support us and would have stepped up instantly.  We just got side swiped on this one.  I take much of the responsibility for failing to see the trap sooner.  The Holy Spirit showed me my failings in this situation.  I should never have allowed this to happen.

-The most important thing is that He is training us for power, wisdom, discernment, and  love to move to a new level of freedom to reach masses of youth and not be held back.

– We will also not back down.  We will continue to warn America and the church about the demonic agenda of the left.  But never at the expense of preaching the Gospel!

Because we are innocent, God will provide abundantly.  We have learned a big lesson and the enemy will pay for what he has done.

This is just a speed bump.  Momentum is strong at Mario Murillo Ministries.  We have cities lined up for tent crusades.  And we are going back to the two we missed.  This was a gigantic fluke I am certain will never happen again.

And why didn’t these conservative Christians hold Reagan to the same standard?  They adored him even while Nancy was studying horoscopes in the White House.

They didn’t require any president to be a squeaky clean pastor until Trump.

Yeah his tweets can be a bit much.  And okay, president Trump is not as smooth as Reagan…but, maybe we don’t need smooth right now.
