DO THESE FIVE THINGS DURING THE SHUTDOWN

You can’t dwell on the frightening images you will see on cable news. You can’t cave in to the hysteria.  There is something extremely important you must take care of.

After you have taken every precaution necessary for remaining safe—after you have settled it in your soul to remain strong in the Lord, wholly trusting in Him, it will be time for you to fight back.

Everything in me tells me these are the most important days you will know in our lifetime. Waste them, and it will be the greatest regret of your life.

Turn your days at home into the most important breakthrough ever. Turn feelings of helplessness into fuel for an amazing outcome. These are days to let God do a shocking new work inside you.

It all begins with the story of Paul being arrested and put in prison. Satan put Paul in prison, intending to inflict massive damage on Christianity. He thought Paul could no longer win souls, and he could not teach the fledgling churches that desperately needed his Apostleship. In fact, he couldn’t do anything…except for one thing.

He began writing. And writing would be the most devastating thing Paul would ever do to Satan’s kingdom. If Paul hadn’t been confined, he might never have had the time to write.  How could he possibly imagine his writings would impact billions?  Paul ended up writing 60% of the New Testament. Selah.

Jailing Paul was the stupidest mistake Satan ever made, besides crucifying Christ. Now let me show you how to make this confinement in your home, his next major mistake.

1. Model faith to your children. Settle it in your soul that God will pay your bills, protect your job and restore what you have lost. Don’t speak fear and doubt in your home! The greatest lesson you will ever model for your children—and the greatest gift you will ever leave to them—is to confess that everything that has been lost will be restored. Because when this is over and God comes through—as you know He will—they will remember and apply these lessons in their lives, whenever they are threatened. The greatest thing your children can watch you do is trust in God.

2. Read the Bible. Dump all the questionable prophetic words and conspiracy theories. Some in the prophetic camp are losing credibility because they foolishly predicted this plague would leave suddenly. Some even set a date—one that will likely prove them wrong.  In the Old Testament such “prophets” would have been stoned. It is this lack of consequence in the prophetic camp that has wreaked havoc and left many unprepared for the storm that is upon us.

The same applies to conspiracies. How much clearer can the Bible be? Isaiah 8:12-13, “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’ concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, neither be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. The Lord of Armies, Him you shall hallow; let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.”

It’s all over the internet, and religious broadcasting: ‘There is a worldwide secret society! It’s the devil and his vessels! Nancy Pelosi cooked up coronavirus in a Chinese laboratory!’

Stop needing a “word from God” from people. Stop digging into controversy. In 2 Timothy 2:23 Paul warned, “Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels.”

Instead, read the Bible! Now that you have a lot of time, get the Word of God in you. That is the most powerful protection, and the best way to understand how to weather this storm.

3. Make a list of goals for this down-time, and work hard to meet those goals. Already, you see how many things have stolen your time.  You see how many things that previously cluttered your life, seem unimportant now. Because you are a child of God, nothing of yours that is vital will be stolen. Your job and your business will be brought back to life. Therefore, choose to see this as a kind of paid vacation. Paid by God.

It is a time to make overdue changes, and big and bold plans for the future. To do that, you must get to work. That means no binge-watching Netflix! It means you seek the heart of God and ask Him to show you the goals He wants you to accomplish. Write those goals out, and make the righteous choices that give those goals the very best chance of coming to pass.

Paul wrote much of the New Testament while he was in forced confinement. Great projects will be born—projects that may swallow up the wrong ones you had before.

Lastly make the most important goal list of all: the things you are never are never going back to.

4.Turn prayer into a habit. Inspiration will lead you to pray, but you must decide to form the habit that will keep you praying. The chilling fact is that if you do not pray during this pandemic, you will never pray at all. Let God deliver you from the greatest hindrances to prayer that I know of: impulse prayer and feeling-based prayer.

If you create that habit, and deepen that habit, you will own life’s greatest skill.  James 5:16, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

5. Focus on personal repentance, not national repentance. You do it! Don’t wait for others, or even think about other people’s repentance. People have been babbling about national repentance as if it was something other people need to do. We don’t see national repentance happening yet, so don’t wait for it to happen. Repent on your own!

We do not even see widespread repentance among preachers. Have you heard many preachers on social media admit they’ve been wrong?  We are flooded with messages from preachers. But have you heard one major pastor or preacher repent or promise that they will run church differently than they did before? Do you see any preacher who isn’t just chomping at the bit to restart the same old thing? I promise you, unless deep repentance takes place, you will be shocked at how unchanged the American church will be, after all of this. Think about this: How much really changed after 9/11?

Remember, God is judging America as much because of the world, as because of the church.  The carnal church has left us open to this disaster. And yet, without repentance, we have zero reason to believe it won’t go back to exactly the way it was before. In other words, they will have learned nothing from the pandemic. They just don’t get it.

We pray that God will not force the issue of repentance by extending and deepening our national crisis, until America implodes completely. But you have to wonder how they can all say they want this to be over, and yet they still will not repent.

But, we must not set our hope on that. Our hope is founded on the knowledge that we must repent before God—and that is personal repentance. That will lead to the real miracle of mercy. You see, you can stand as a priest between the sins of America, the sins of the church, and God. That is true intercession. There is a righteous core of believers who can turn this plague away. PETER ON THE DAY JESUS DIED

First, he screamed and he kept screaming until he could scream no more. Then he fell off a cliff into the abyss of broken souls. He crashed with a force that could have moved the earth. Around him lay fragments—the new and hideous replacements of his former self. Shame replaced love. Cowardice replaced faith. Hope was driven out to make room for the mocking predator. Worst of all was the deep despair he felt as he saw his destiny plunge into a black hole of regret.

This all happened the day after Jesus died.

To survive, Peter virtually became a robot. He reverted to fishing. It’s what he was programmed to do. It’s what he knew best. He went through the motions to avoid every feeling, suppressing every emotion.

The difference between Peter and Judas Iscariot is razor thin. The fever of despair and regret raged in Peter every bit as hot as it had in Judas. It drove Judas to suicide. Why not Peter? Why didn’t he do what the other traitor did? It was because Jesus had prayed for him.

Satan told Peter a lie. Peter not only believed that lie, he now embodied it. And, it is the same lie that Satan is telling America right now—the lie that all the important things are gone forever.

Whenever those who hate God and America try to enforce a change, they call it ‘THE NEW NORMAL.’ They sold us on ‘THE NEW NORMAL’ of abortion, same sex marriage, and godless education. Their latest excuse for seizing control is the coronavirus. Something to remember: ‘the new normal’ is always nothing other than the old abnormal.

Peter was tortured by memories. Though he tried to fight it with all his might, it was impossible not to relive those days. Two mistakes haunted him the most. Thinking he could save Jesus, he had taken a sword and had swung it at the head of the high priest’s servant, Malchus, who, fortunately had moved just in time, losing only an ear. But his greatest horror was his discovery that he was a coward, and that he had denied Jesus three times. The rooster was still crowing in his spirit.

The hardest thing for Peter to forget was the day he met Jesus. Peter had been minding his own business when Jesus interrupted his entire life.  After fishing all night, Peter had caught nothing.   His hands were red and sore from handling the heavy nets.  Every muscle ached. He had nothing to show for a brutal night out on the water.

Then the strange Teacher said, “Let your nets down again for a catch.”  Peter half-heartedly did as he was asked, and the catch was so enormous that it terrified him.  He begged Jesus to keep His distance, “I am a sinful man!” Peter cried.

That’s when he heard the words about his destiny.  “Follow Me and I will make you a fisher of men.”

There is no doubt that Peter was convinced that now, after his failure and denial, it was too late. That fact must be clearly understood or you will not get the impact of the lesson I am about to relate.

It’s dawn on Resurrection Sunday.  Peter couldn’t know that at that very moment, an angel was talking about him.  Mark 16:7, “But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that (Jesus) is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He told to you.”  The angel added the words “and Peter.”  Why?  Because God knew Peter would have disqualified himself if the invitation was “for disciples only.”

Peter grabbed the messenger who related this to him and demanded: “Are you certain the angel said my name?!” “Yes, the words were, “Tell the disciples, and Peter.”” At that moment, Peter came back from the dead. He knew he was not rejected. He knew the unmatched glory of a true second chance.

Satan had worked hard to prevent Peter’s apostleship, because he knew this man would shake the gates of hell.  The first shaking came on the Day of Pentecost. The wind and fire of the Holy Spirit’s baptism transformed Peter

The coward, who had denied his Lord three times, was lovingly restored by the resurrected Jesus. He appeared to Peter, giving him three new chances to affirm his love. Jesus even provided a charcoal fire similar to the one near which Peter had experienced failure. Peter was completely transformed. He was now a lion carrying a devastating witness. He roared, “This is that which was spoken by the Prophet Joel!”

In the days after Jesus died, evil exerted a crushing blow on the entire city. All the Christians hid in their homes behind locked doors, and it’s like that today. Satan wishes to crush our hopes and dreams. Evil men would sell us the lie that we must adapt to a grim, cold, and dark lesser vision of America, the church, and our futures.

Those who are marked by God are unstoppable. When the doors reopen for America, God will fully restore our destiny.

But there is one miracle that remains to be explored. Cutting off Malchus’ ear haunted Peter. But there was more to it than just healing an ear. Because, my friend, that night Jesus healed more than an ear—knowing the future, Jesus knew Peter must not be sitting on death row on the day of Pentecost. Jesus prayed “permit even this” and reattached the ear, in order to protect Peter’s destiny.

Right now, He is also guarding yours. This pandemic, cannot stop God’s destiny for your life.

MARY MAGDALENE THE DAY JESUS DIED

One of the greatest cruelties—if not the greatest in history—was done to Mary Magdalene.  She was once sold on the streets. She knew the special insanity of demon possession.  She knew the yawning blackness of total despair.

Then Jesus rescued her.  Jesus cast out seven vicious devils—devils she thought would never leave.  Once deemed human garbage, she is now redeemed and planted into a family of indescribable love.  Things would never be the same.  Her nights of remorse, her days of futility, her shame, her emptiness, were now all distant memories.

For three years she lived a life she could have never imagined, crisscrossing Judea, hanging on Jesus’ every word, weeping gloriously over every miracle.  Each morning, she awakened a more powerful and joyous woman of God!  She thought that this would go on forever.

People use the phrase “nothing could be worse…”  They use it before describing something unimaginably terrible.  I will use it this way: Nothing could be worse than to be in hell, and then taste heaven, only to return back to hell.

Then on that fateful Friday, it all went horribly, horribly wrong.  How could the One Who called the dead back to life and silenced a storm at sea, be arrested?  How could the One Who gave words of exquisite beauty, love and wisdom, be tortured and killed?  No one wanted to save Jesus more than Mary.  No one felt more horror and helplessness than she.

That night, profound hope had given way to even deeper bitterness and disappointment.  She must have thought, “If only I had never met Him.  If only He had left me to die in the streets.”  She slept only after exhaustion became more powerful than sorrow.   Too wounded to go on living, and perhaps too tired to commit suicide…

Mary is of special importance to me today, because her testimony is the best one I can think of as we commemorate this Good Friday, in such a dark time as the one we are living in.  Mary’s miracle is the miracle America needs now!

Here’s why: When the first shafts of Sunday morning light stirred her awake, she dreaded it.  If ever a heart was broken beyond repair—if ever a soul would rage against the approach of hope—if ever a woman just wanted to go back to sleep and never wake up, it was Mary.

That is why she was shocked when she felt an odd energy coming over her.  She soon felt an even stranger impulse—to go to the tomb where Jesus lay!  How could she return to the only spot on earth that could reopen her wound?

What overruled her despair?  What fuel was driving her so completely against her common sense and her broken heart?  Paul answers that emphatically! “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit Who dwells in you” (Romans 8:11).

Do you know any therapist capable of rebuilding the ashes and rubble of her soul?  Can any drug, any teaching, any relationship, reassemble her heart the way the gentle but powerful Comforter could?

We all know about the power of the resurrection: it was the greatest display of power the universe has ever known; even greater than the alleged “big bang” that, theoretically, began the universe. The resurrection sent shock waves through the principalities and powers of darkness.  It shattered Satan’s power and stripped him of the keys of death and Hell (Rev. 1:8).  Jesus set the captives free in the bowels of the earth, and “led captivity captive” (Ephesians 4:8).

But, the first burst of resurrection power was much gentler. Mary was the first human to feel the power of the resurrection.  Her eyes, which were red and sore from sobbing, were now refreshed and clear.  Her arms which had hung limp from heartsick lethargy were now responsive, strong, and full of purpose. She sat up and found hope pumping through her veins. She wondered, “Why!”

A notion seized her, gently, but firmly.  She knew she was to go to the tomb, and she immediately got going!  Washing up, brushing her hair, and quickly getting dressed. All the while the expectancy of an indescribable ‘something’ was building in her soul.  Before she knew it, she was out the door, and charging toward her worst fear.  Only, now, she was not afraid.

She found the tomb vacant. Then she turned and saw Him whom her soul loved.  Many awesome things happened that Easter, but none more wonderful than Mary reunited with her Savior.

In the genetically altered, politically charged, drug addicted, violent purgatory that is America today, Mary Magdalene stands as a poignant figure.  She is the best testimony I can think of for our national dreams that have gone up in smoke.  Our culture has wearied itself with perversion…hunting down everything natural and replacing it with a disfigured counterfeit. It has marched, protested, and boycotted the very color and life out of everything—to the point that everything is a cause for taking offense.

What happened to Mary, is proof that there is nothing better than the Gospel.

America!  This is what you need!

“Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons” (Mark 16:9).

JESUS APPEARED FIRST TO MARY!  He had never forgotten her. He knew she was suffering the most, so He healed this precious soul first!

5 THINGS YOU MUST DO DURING THE SHUTDOWN

The next few days will be very dark for America. Experts say we will see losses such as we have not seen since the Second World War.  As horrendous as that statement is, there is something else you must realize. You can’t dwell on the frightening images you will see on cable news. You can’t cave in to the hysteria of this coming week.

Right now, forget about how long you pray. Focus on praying each and every day. Behaviorists have shown that it takes doing something 35 times in a row, before it becomes a habit. If you create that habit, and deepen that habit, you will own life’s greatest skill.  James 5:16, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

2 Chronicles 7:14, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

SPITBALLS AT A BATTLESHIP

Casting a spell against President Trump is like throwing spit balls at a battleship. Putting a curse on him is like trying to chip granite with a plastic fork. Any witch or warlock that tries this will meet with dismal failure.  Oh, maybe you heard about the thousand or so witches that put a spell and a curse on Donald Trump.

Here’s the first reason they will bitterly fail: This is all based on lies. I can’t imagine a more tedious individual than a leftist witch. The idea of a witch by itself is a picture of futility: a person who is trying to use the powers of darkness, thinking they can control evil. A witch who is also a leftist is an even greater exercise in futility. A leftist is an angry, uninformed, emotional being, incapable of making a reasonable defense of their failed ideas. They are also unwitting pawns of Satan equally bent on destroying America. The ‘leftist-witch’ combines two of the most annoying mindsets into one tiresome and grandiose concept. They are basing their spells and curses on vapid lies.

It is a lie that Trump is racist. It is a lie that he is a Nazi. It is a lie that he means to make America a totalitarian state.

The Bible is exceedingly clear about the effectiveness of curses based on lies. Proverbs 26:2 says, “Like a fluttering sparrow or a darting swallow, an undeserved curse will not land on its intended victim.”

Here’s a bigger reason this joke will flop: You cannot curse what God has blessed. Balaam tried it, and failed! You may be outraged that Donald Trump is President. He may embody everything you hate, but none of that matters because Trump was put in the White House by a power infinitely stronger than witchcraft. How much stronger? Ah, I’m glad you asked.

Witchcraft is based on a big fat lie. At this time of year Hollywood uses Halloween films to sell this big fat lie. It goes like this…supposedly God and the devil are locked in a mortal battle for control of the universe.  Satan is portrayed as a worthy opponent for God. In Theology, this heresy is called Dualism. In some of these horror films, God can’t even hold His own against those possessed by devils!

In The Exorcist, a priest is helpless before the power of a demonized girl. Satan is portrayed as cunning and irresistible in The Devil’s Advocate.  In The Exorcism of Emily Rose, God is so limited He is forced to leave a girl demon possessed in order to help prove He exists!

The Bible obliterates these lies. Oh, how the Devil hates the Bible, because the Holy Scriptures show Satan for the conquered and defeated being that he is.  The Word of God records his defeat by the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, His resurrection, and the impending doom of the devil when he is thrown into the Lake of Fire.  No wonder he has moved men through the ages to blast the pages of the Bible and ban it whenever possible!  Not only did the devil try to manipulate the world into rejecting the Bible, but he has also fooled believers into downgrading its authority.

Look at this clear example of how totally Christ dominates devils:

“Then (Jesus and His disciples) sailed to the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee.  And when He stepped out onto the land, there met Him a certain man from the city who had demons for a long time. And he wore no clothes, nor did he live in a house but in the tombs.  When he saw Jesus, he cried out, fell down before Him, and with a loud voice said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Highest God? I beg You, do not torment me!” (Luke 8:26-28)

Notice how the man fell at the feet of Jesus, begging for mercy the moment Jesus stepped upon the shore.  This was unconditional surrender!  Now let us consider how many demons were in this man.  Donald Grey Barnhouse said, “At Gadera the Lord confronted the poor man who was possessed by the powers of Satan.  He called upon the evil force to declare itself by name and the evil spirit answered, ‘My name is Legion: for we are many.’  If we may put any stress on the meaning of the name it is highly significant to note that in the time of Augustus a Roman legion counted 6,100 foot soldiers and 726 horsemen.”

Although there were thousands of these imps, yet they were so powerless they offered no resistance to the Son of God!

Now let’s look at another example of supremacy: “1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished.” (Revelation 20:1-3)

Here we have an angel of such low rank that we don’t even know his name.  Yet he easily puts Satan in a hammerlock, cuffs him, and imprisons him for a thousand years!

Want more proof that “leftist-witches” are delusional? The Bible speaks of those who call evil good and good evil. (Is. 5:20). CBN reported “…these self-proclaimed “witches” are planning to conduct a ritual which is meant to “bind,” but not harm the President unlike a “curse” or a “hex.” These witches believe they are doing something positive for the entire country by not allowing President Trump to cause harm to the US by his actions.”

Thinking they are using the “black arts” to produce “something positive” is the epitome of delusional.

We as Christians neither disrespect the devil nor do we fear him. And all those delusional followers of Satan who wish to use witchcraft on Trump should know this—it’s spitballs at a battleship!

THERE IS PROOF

Jesus rose from the dead. The Bible says there is proof.  Acts 17:31 “For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”
Because of this proof we should not cower before the culture or present our case in apologetic terms. We should not sheepishly offer Christ in couched terms or clever words. Most of all, we should not accept a faith that believes only part of the story.
Recently, a poll said that a growing number of Christian youth do not believe it is right to share their faith with those who do not believe. This trend violates the Bible. It disobeys the direct command of Christ to go into all the world and make disciples. (Mark 16:15)
This reticence to share is rooted in doubt about the supernatural origin of Christianity. The same Jesus who rose from the Dead is the One Who said “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:12).  Since, He is the only Way, then the only thing we can do is share with all men, all faiths, and all nations the one true Way to God.
There is a growing embarrassment about being Christian.  There are false accusations of racism and tyranny that today’s professors attribute to the teachings of Jesus. This makes young believers shy and confused about how to answer the lies.  A good start is to realize how absurd those charges are. To claim that tyranny and racism rose out of “love your neighbor and forgive your enemies” is not only fallacious, it is ridiculous.

Many young believers do not think the story of Easter is real. That is not just sad it is cruel.  Cruel, because it tortures the young believer into a divided soul. They want to adhere to the morals of Jesus but struggle with the supernatural. That is painful because it is impossible. The veracity of Jesus is inextricably tied to the resurrection.
Generation Z honors Jesus as a great moral teacher. But Jesus claimed He would rise from the dead. If He did not, He lied, and if He lied, He is not a great moral teacher.  Paul took it further by saying, in that case, all of us who preach are liars. Paul went to great lengths to make this point:
1 Corinthians 15: 12 “But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead. But He did not raise Him if in fact the dead are not raised.16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost.19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.”
The resurrection of Jesus is not just your great hope, it is your great responsibility.  If you don’t believe Jesus rose from the dead you will not go to heaven, and you have no reason to say you are a Christian. The resurrection is even central to the model salvation prayer in Romans 10: 8 “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”
“But now is Christ risen.” Those words from Paul should electrify our spirit. You should declare it loud and clear. You should understand that whenever you declare it Satan convulses—angels can’t help but join you in jubilation—and your body, mind, and spirit will instantly shake off the despair of modern life.

PETER THE DAY AFTER

Peter failed in spectacular fashion.  He bragged he would stand with Jesus even if everyone else fled.  He fell asleep in the Garden.  He assaulted the servant of the High Priest.  Though he was warned about it in advance, he went ahead and denied Christ three times.
Here’s a question to everyone who has ever failed: Why did Jesus put the man’s severed ear back on?  (Luke 22:51). We know Peter had taken a sword and had cut it off.  We know why.  We can also guess that Jesus healed Malchus’ ear out of compassion.  But there is something way deeper going on here. What does that have to do with anyone who ever failed?  Everything.
The day after Jesus died wouldn’t have hurt Peter so much if Peter didn’t love Jesus so much.  That he had abandoned Christ began to torment him.  It could have devastated him for the rest of his life.   But right at this point, he doesn’t believe there is a rest of his life.
The day after Jesus died is Peter’s day to hide like a hunted animal.  A day to let it sink in that there is nothing left to live for.  He was a hair’s breadth away from the fate of Judas Iscariot.  Worst of all, he lost his destiny.
Destiny is a mysterious thing.  The same force that can inspire a man to greatness can—in his failure—torture him.  The pain level depends on the size of the destiny.  In the case of Peter, it was massive.
Peter was minding his own business when Jesus interrupted his whole life.  Fishing all night, Peter had caught nothing.   His hands are red and sore from handling the heavy nets.  Every muscle aches. He has nothing to show for a brutal night at sea.
The strange Teacher says, “Let your nets down again for a catch.”  Peter halfheartedly does as he is asked.  The enormous catch terrifies him.  He begs Jesus to keep his distance, “I am a sinful man.”

That’s when he heard the words about his destiny.  “Follow Me and I will make you a fisher of men.”  Then, once more, the day after Jesus has died, Peter is just a fisherman again.  It sticks in his throat to say it.
They say that regret is the cancer of life—if so, on this terrible day, Peter is terminal.  He could have prayed Psalm 69: 1 “Save me, O God! For the waters have come up to my neck. 2 I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing; I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me. 3 I am weary with my crying; my throat is dry; my eyes fail while I wait for my God. Those who hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head; they are mighty who would destroy me…”
“I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing” simply means that in the quicksand of despair, nothing that used to help you snap out of it works now.  All of your comfort is gone. There is nothing to grab to save you. You will sink until you vanish.
Now it’s dawn on Sunday.  Peter can’t know that at that moment, an angel is talking about him.  Mark 16:  7 “But go, tell His disciples—and Peter—that He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him, as He said to you.”  The angel added the words “and Peter.”  Why?  Because God knew Peter would have disqualified himself if the invitation was “for disciples only.” Wouldn’t you love to have seen Peter’s face when they told him the angel’s message?
So why did Jesus put the ear back on?  He knew Peter’s destiny, and Peter couldn’t be in prison on the day of Pentecost.  Jesus knew his destiny. He knows yours.

MARY MAGDALENE THE DAY JESUS DIED

One of the greatest cruelties—if not the greatest cruelty in history—was done to Mary Magdalene.  She was once sold on the streets. She knew the special insanity of demon possession.  She knew the yawning blackness of total despair.

Jesus rescued her.  Jesus cast out 7 vicious devils—devils she thought would never leave.  Once deemed human garbage she is now redeemed, and rooted into a family of indescribable love.  Things would never be the same.  Her nights of remorse, her days of futility, her shame, her emptiness were all distant memories.

For 3 years, she lived a life she could have never imagined.  Crisscrossing Judea, hanging on Jesus’ every word, weeping gloriously over every miracle.  Each morning she awakened a more powerful and joyous woman of God!  She thought that this would go on forever.

People use the phrase “nothing could be worse…”  They use it before describing something unimaginably terrible.  I will use it this way: Nothing could be worse than to be in hell, and then taste heaven, only to return to hell.

Then on that fateful day it all went horribly, horribly wrong.  How could the one who called the dead back to life, and silenced a storm at sea be arrested?  How could one who gave words of exquisite beauty, love and wisdom, be tortured and killed.  No one wanted to save Jesus more than Mary.  No one felt more horror and helplessness than she.

That night, profound hope had given way to even deeper bitterness and disappointment.  If only I had never met him.  If only he had left me to die in the streets.  She slept only after exhaustion became more powerful than sorrow.   Too wounded to go on living.  Maybe too tired to commit suicide.

Mary matters to me today because her testimony is the best one I can think of on this Good Friday in such a dark time.  Mary’s miracle is the one America needs now!  Here’s why…

When the first shafts of Sunday morning light stirred her awake, she dreaded it.  If ever a heart was broken beyond repair—if ever a soul would rage against the approach of hope—if ever a woman just wanted to go back to sleep and never wake up, it was Mary.

That is why she was shocked when she felt an odd energy.  She soon felt an even stranger impulse… to go to the grave of Jesus?  How could she return to the only spot on earth that could open her wound wider?

What overruled her despair?  What fuel is driving her so completely against her common sense and her broken heart?  Paul answers that emphatically! “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”- Romans 8:11

Do you know any therapist capable of rebuilding the ashes and rubble in her soul?  Can any drug, any teaching, any relationship, reassemble her heart the way this gentle but powerful influence could?

We all know about the power of the resurrection.  It was the greatest display of power the universe has ever known; even greater than the alleged “big bang” that birthed the universe. It sent shock waves through the principalities and powers of darkness.  It shattered hell and stripped Satan of the keys of death.  Jesus set the captives free in the bowels of the earth and “led captivity captive.”

But the first burst of resurrection power was much gentler. She was the first human to feel the power of the resurrection.  Her eyes which were red and sore from sobbing are now refreshed and clear.  Her arms which hung limp from heartsick lethargy were now responsive, strong, and full of purpose. She sat up and found hope pumping through her veins. She did not know why!

A notion gently but firmly seizes her.  She was to go to the grave.  She got going!  Washing up, brushing her hair, and quickly getting dressed; all the while the expectancy of some indescribable something is building in her soul.  Before she knows it she is out the door and charging toward her worst fear.  Only she is not afraid.

She found the tomb vacant.  She turned and saw Him whom her soul loved.  Many awesome things happened that Easter but none more wonderful than Mary reunited with her Savior.

In the genetically altered, politically charged, drug addicted, violent purgatory that is America, Mary Magdalene stands as a poignant figure.   She is the best testimony I can think of for our national dreams that have gone up in smoke.  Our culture has wearied itself with perversion…hunted everything natural and replaced it with a disfigured counterfeit… it has marched, protested, boycotted the very color and life out of everything—everything is a cause to take offense.

What happened to Mary is why there is nothing better than the Gospel.  America!  This is what you need!

Mark 16:9, “Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons.” HE APPEARED FIRST TO HER!  He never forgot her. He knew she was suffering the most so He healed this precious soul first!

HERE’S WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID IN PULPITS THIS EASTER

Millions are a captive audience on Easter.  Will the preachers say what they need to say?  Experts say no.  They claim the euphoria of having a crowd will dull the edge of truth.  They claim that someone who has been a motivational speaker all year won’t suddenly become a spiritual reformer.
If they’re right, Easter will be the greatest missed opportunity of the church year.  What needs to be said?  I will brave an answer, not out of arrogance, but out of a broken heart.  I would shed the typical formality and begin this way:
This morning I need to explain how our nation flipped so suddenly, and began calling evil good, and good evil.  This also happened on the day Jesus died.  Pilate was doing everything he could to free Jesus…when things took a dark turn.
Pilate told the crowd he would give them a choice to release a prisoner.  He was certain they would free Jesus.
Many in that crowd heard Jesus teach and their souls were lifted to heaven.  Some gained freedom from their dark past.  Some in that mob had been healed or their children were healed.
Nevertheless, a demon-driven change came over the people to get Jesus on the cross.  Those who cried “hosanna he that comes in the name of the Lord.”  Now scream, “crucify him, crucify him!”
But it is not enough for them to condemn the innocent; they must also release the criminal.  Having called good evil, they must not call evil good.  Who was their choice?  In Matthew 27:16 Barabbas is called a “notorious prisoner.”  In Mark 15:7, echoed in Luke 23:19, he was “in prison with the rebels who had committed murder.
Those same evil spirits have fueled the change that has come over our nation.  Many of our citizens have now gone against all of their former values.
It was not God’s will for the disciples to defeat the mob and save Jesus from the cross.  However, now that He won, we have the right and responsibility to do it.
So, I ask you why then—why are we letting them destroy everything that made us great?  Why do we passively sit back and watch a movement—that claims to be working for justice—create even more injustice?
They make railing accusations: “you are a woman without a mind—you are man without a soul—you don’t deserve to live because of who you voted for.  Even though you are law abiding, we will take what you have because someone else abused what you have.  My need for self-expression outweighs your right to be a child.”
When they tell us they want to silence the church—when they tell us their opinion is the only one allowed—when disagreeing will cost you your rights, your job, and even your life—when they burn buildings, protect killers, and convict innocent people—the church should have no response?  Do we sit back and just lose our freedom of religion and speech?
How can we remain silent about the great evil in our nation, on the very day we celebrate Christ’s victory over evil?  He did not just win, He devastated demonic power.

I am not talking about politics…I am talking about evil.  I am talking about evil your children will live under.  I am talking about evil that will make it impossible to preach the Gospel in our nation.  We should ignore this?
Jesus did not just die for our sins—He died to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8 says, “He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning.  For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”
I will go so far as to say that victory over evil is the central theme of the Easter story.  The resurrection of Jesus was an attack that disarmed Satan.  Colossians 2; 15 “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
It is the calling of the church to enforce the power of the Cross, and the Resurrection, on the works of Satan.  This is what it’s all about.  Today—above all days—we must realize it!
God is looking for people who will rise up, based on the authority won on Easter, and declare to the powers and principalities in heavenly places, “you must take your filthy hands off of our nation!”
I would tell the relatives and guests that becoming a Christian means forsaking all to follow Christ…and by doing so, they would receive power—power unlike anything they had ever experienced before.
Since Easter was an explosion—celebrating it should also be an explosion!  If only we would repent.  Then we could truly celebrate.  If only the people of God would surrender on Easter.   The power of the resurrection would overtake us.  Great shouts of Hosanna, tears of joy would overwhelm us.  And an inward fire to rise up to change our nation.  Hallelujah!
Let today be the day the song is not just words:  “There is power in the Name of Jesus, to break every chain.  There’s an army rising up to break every chain.”
