Student asked to remove her cross may leave SSU

Sonoma State University student Audrey Jarvis wears a cross necklace much like the one she was asked to remove while working at a school event in June. Jarvis said a supervisor asked her to remove the necklace while representing the school. SSU officials on Monday personally apologized to her.

The Sonoma State student who was asked by a supervisor to remove her cross to avoid offending non-Christians says she’s not sure she will ever return to the school, but she said the university seems to be taking the matter seriously.

“The university is doing everything right and if I do decide to attend somewhere else, it would not be for lack of effort on the university’s part,” Audrey Jarvis said Monday after she and her attorney, Hiram Sasser, met with university officials.

University spokeswoman Susan Kashack said she hoped Jarvis returns to school in the fall, but in the wake of the incident, the student says she is considering her options for her junior year.

“I have some things to figure out; I’m taking a little time for myself,” she said. “I am not really sure where my future will take me, but hopefully within the next few weeks, I will be able to make some decisions and we’ll take it from there.”

Jarvis, 19, an event planner for the student government, known as Associated Students, was working at a student orientation event last month when a supervisor approached her to ask her to remove or hide a large cross necklace, saying it might be offensive or off-putting to students looking to attend the school or join the organization.

Jarvis, upset by the request, left the orientation early. After talking with lawyers from the Texas-based Liberty Institute, she filed a complaint with the university. The story hit Fox News late last month and was picked up by news organizations as far away as the U.K.

President Ruben Armiñana and others at the university quickly apologized for the incident, saying it was a misguided but well-intentioned mistake by the supervisor.

Neither Jarvis nor the university have named the person responsible for asking her to remove the cross. Jarvis said she didn’t want to “drag anyone’s name through the mud” and the university has said it is a “personnel matter,” which they treat as confidential.

Associated Students Executive Director Erik Dickson was out of the office this week and could not be reached for comment.

Monday’s meeting, which was closed to the press, was intended for the university to pass on its apology directly to Jarvis and to explain how the matter will be handled administratively.

Jarvis had asked for a “religious accommodation,” essentially a religiously based exception to any policy the university might have about wearing jewelry or other clothing. But since the university does not have any such policy, spokeswoman Kashack said, there is nothing from which to exempt her.

“There is nothing on this campus that anyone could wear or say that would be not OK,” she said.

  • An official at Sonoma State University ordered a student working at a freshman orientation fair to remove or hide a cross necklace on two separate occasions. The unnamed official feared that other students could be offended by the two-inch-long symbol of Christianity.

The first of the two incidents occurred at the public school in Northern California’s wine country on June 27, reports Fox News. The official, an orientation supervisor, warned Sonoma State student Audrey Jarvis that “the chancellor” enforced a policy against wearing religious items.

“The chancellor” is presumably Timothy P. White, the chancellor of the entire 23-school California State University system.

According to Hiram Sasser, an attorney representing Jarvis, the supervisor advised the practicing Catholic “that she could not wear her cross necklace because it might offend others, it might make incoming students feel unwelcome.”

Jarvis, 19, said she was floored by the explanation.

“I was offended because I believe as a Christian woman it is my prerogative to display my faith any way I like so long as it is not harming anyone else,” she told Fox News. “I was very hurt and felt as if the university’s mission statement — which includes tolerance and inclusivity to all — was violated.”

On a second occasion, the supervisor ordered Jarvis to conceal the cross under her shirt or get rid of it. That’s when the liberal arts major decided to bail early on the orientation job.

Sasser, the director of litigation at the conservative- and Christian-oriented Liberty Institute, calls the supervisor’s actions “obvious religious discrimination” and is seeking an apology.

The attorney added that the law is pretty settled in this area. “State employees may wear crosses while they are performing their duties as long as the wearing does not interfere with the employees’ duties or harm the employer’s business interests,” Sasser counseled.

Management at Sonoma State, a school known mostly as a laidback hippie haven with a nice library, is apologizing repeatedly and without reservation.

“Someone who works here was concerned that the cross might be off-putting to students who are coming to campus for the first time,” confirmed university spokeswoman Susan Kashack. She added that the supervisor’s behavior was “completely wrong.”

“It was absolutely an inappropriate action for him to make that request of her,” Kashack added, according to Fox News.

“It’s possible that political correctness got out of hand.”

Sonoma State President Ruben Arminana is in on the groveling as well.

“The president was very upset about it and asked me to contact Miss Jarvis and give a profuse apology,” Kashack said.

Kashack noted that school officials have communicated with the unidentified employee who ordered Jarvis to remove the cross necklace. However, she refused to disclose what was said or if he faces any sort of consequences.

A National Youth Revival is coming.

There is a fresh openness to the Gospel about to break on America.  It will not come through the usual channels.  The case for this prediction is strong so please take a moment to read this, not just to be encouraged, but to be prepared.

During my entire ministry, I have studied the Word of God.  Even though I believe in prophetic words it has been my habit to absorb as much as I possibly could directly from the Bible.

It is from this body of evidence that I will make give you my considered opinion that the last great revival on earth will be a youth revival.  That is correct, the fuse for global awakening is the young.

The last two verse of the Old Testament is teeming with meaning: Malachi 4:  5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 6 And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

There are three quotes in that verse that have great meaning to you right now.

1. “I will send”:  It will come from God Himself. This means that nothing can prevent its arrival. Times of refreshing from the throne of God make their way to Earth without regard to human planning and often at the most unexpected time and in a most unexpected way.

John 1:6 says, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.”  John the Baptist baffled experts.  He was a phenomenon that violated every religious opinion of his time.  So is it today that God will give the order and the raging of men will not alter the course of this event.

2. “He will turn the hearts”:   1 Kings 18: 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”

3. Lest:  Even though this is a threat it is the most powerful part of the promise.  It reminds us that it is wrong to assume judgment or as Jonah did, secretly desire judgment. Joel 2:13 tells us, “So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm. 14 Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him—A grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God?

Now here are my reasons for believing we are at the brink of a youth harvest in America:

1. I believe that God provoked Satan to overplay his hand thereby getting youth sick of excess.  Immoral activist, aging baby boomers are beginning to look disgusting and tedious to youth.  Ambivalence toward Abortion, socialism, Europe and atheism and even feminism is driving them investigate Christ.

2. It is such a bad time that it is a good time. Since revival is sent to avert disaster it means that it will occur just before disaster.  The times that seem to make revival look impossible are very the times in which they appear.

Why do I think that disaster will be averted?  Lost in all of the dizzying changes to marriage, drugs, healthcare, is the fact that the majority of Americans still believe in Christ.  Even though there is widespread lukewarm faith, there is a living taproot.  Radical voices have hijacked the microphone but they do not represent reality.  America is way more spiritually flammable that experts know and the fire of heaven will spread fast.

Three things we need to do right now:

1.  Men become fathers!  Spiritual fathers will usher in the next revival.  Hitler sensed a vacuum in the youth of Germany devastated by the First World War.  He knew that a father figure could own the heart of the youth.  If you open your heart you will also open your schedule and your home to an orphaned generation.

2. Make your prayer for revival sincere and knowledgeable.   Much of our prayer is bouncing off the walls because it is not coming from a heart that is convinced or aware of what they are asking for. When true prayer appears it is not only effective it is contagious.

8.  We must build barns.  Proverbs 10:5 “He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.”

John 4:35 “Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

Luke 10:2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

No longer can church be a monument to a bygone era or a marketing center for mass superficiality.  Our buildings must be retooled, they must become youth oriented upper rooms where God turns the wreckage of young lives into trophies of His power and Grace!

These verses serve as a loving warning.  Churches must start now to make room for interruptions. Youth will arrive.  We will be ordered to go out and get them.  Don’t say it is not possible or that youth are not ready.  The stage is set, the fuse is lit I pray you are ready!

Why am I standing next to this empty wheelchair?

Ironically, not long ago I preached a sermon about how we should all hate to see an empty chair in a church.  Here is the one great exception to that: An empty wheelchair!

At some point back about 11 months ago it became known as the Santa Rosa Fire; a family of God breathing believers  with a from several churches with a simple passion for more of Jesus.  Nobody can credit the continuing ignition of this revival in Santa Rosa to any one man or congregation.

When I agreed to return last night for the one year anniversary of this FIRE I was concerned about nostalgia.  I did not want to try to recreate something Jesus did before.  I told them that I did not want to Twist Again Like We Did Last Summer.”

One thing we did revisit was the miracle of the man paralyzed 38 years who waited by the pool of Bethesda in John 5.  A simple but mighty truth overcame us all.  By healing the man without an angel stirring the water and by doing it on the Sabbath day Jesus destroyed two religious abuses in one fell swoop.

Satan yearns to attach a superstition to any simple truth and fog it with side issues.  When form and ritual overwhelm the original goal we see silly things.  The Pharisees sought loopholes and hilariously ended up working hard at resting on the Sabbath.

We can all see the modern versions of this.  We all believe in angels, gold dust, feathers, soaking and even shaking under the power but it is so easy to forget Jesus Himself.  When any of these acts become an end in themselves or a means to the end we lose something priceless.   Jesus is the means and the end!

Miracles do the most immediate and widespread damage to Satan.  This is why he labors more in this arena than any other.  His constant aim is to pervert the simplicity of healing:  By adding emotionalism and superstition, he able to discredit the glorious weapon of healing.

I have no illusions about the limits of my preaching.  What happened next in the meeting could never be credited to oratory:  Jesus came and began to heal people in the audience.  It happened effortlessly and freely.  Jesus prevailed over every method and approach to healing and simply removed disease.

I walked to the back of the hall and the lady in the wheelchair caught my eye.  I could see the epic struggle in her heart.  She strained to see all of the other healings and wanted desperately for it to be her turn.

The next time that I walked by her the struggle had subsided; she now had the look of someone simply waiting on Jesus.   That faith, the miracle which only Jesus can impart began to emanate in her soul.

Back in the pulpit, I turned to survey the audience and we were all startled to see her up out of the wheelchair.  Stutter steps turned into a forceful stride.  After one lap she was not content with power walking so she began to run!   Bedlam!

Here is the message of this miracle to you:  Jesus has not changed!  When we let Him dominate our crisis miracles overtake us.  Every last drop of trouble you face can be surrendered to His care.

Do You See the Chains?

chain copy

Do You See the Chains?

Philippians 1:14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.”

Paul was in chains because of Christ. This ignited boldness in the church.  It was when they saw the chains that it all became clear. What needed to be done became clear.  What needed to be said became clear.   The thought of their beloved apostle in chains… unchained them!

Let me ask you a question.  Do you see the chains?   Can you see basic rights removed and false rights created? Have you watched churches threatened by the IRS and local governments that want to exile congregations out of the American life?   Are you watching tax payer money used to advance an anti-God agenda?  Do you see the chains?

As you read this our government expands its ban on free speech and freedom of worship in the United States.  I know that a statement like that can seem unreal but let me assure you it is not.

Protests halted an outreach with Tim Tebow at First Baptist Church in Dallas simply because that church taught that homosexuality is a sin!  How could anyone have imagined a day when sermons could be censored or banned as hate speech simply because they upheld the Word of God?

Washington D.C. has declared war on Christian evangelists.  Many of them on television do not want to say anything about this.  Let me ask you again: Do you see the chain?

We must see the chains and become bold!  How do I know that bold preaching will work?  I know it will work because the Word of God has never returned void!  I know because it is only a minority of radicals in politics, Hollywood, unions and the media that are making all the noise. The vast majority of Americans want truth!

I know because as you read this a cluster of revivals are breaking out in the region surrounding the San Francisco Bay Area.  Think of that!  In the bastion of liberalism, youth are turning to Christ because God is confirming His Word with signs, wonders and miracles!  Not only here, but fires continue to burn in our nationwide outreaches.

hands out

If there is one truth that I tried to drive home in the main article it is this:  IT IS NOT BECAUSE WE ARE HATED THAT WE DO NOT PREACH THE TRUTH, IT IS BECAUSE WE DO NOT PREACH THE TRUTH THAT WE ARE HATED.

The Body of Christ has the combination that America needs right now.  We have the soldiers, we have the message, we have the opportunity and we have the anointing!  Only one thing is needed, the ammunition of boldness to strike the church to take the fight to the heart of darkness in the Name of Jesus!

I cannot impress upon you the urgency of registering to be alerted on these blogs.  We fully expect Obama to seize more control of Facebook.  Facebook is in the tank because they just got billions of dollars in tax break.  See the documentation for this in a coming blog.

Yuba City: Another fire breaks out in Northern California.

Yuba City Revival

Try to read this blog in a quiet place because I really want what I have to say today to sink into your spirit.  It is common and often overblown to hear the term revival on Facebook.  It is easy to trumpet some event in its infant stage as revival.  There is also a widespread tendency to hype something into being a revival just to gather the curious.   I solemnly assure you that this report is none of the above.

God has hit Yuba City.  This enclave north of Sacramento California is already in the throes of a new kind of visitation.  When drug addicts knock on the door of the church asking to be saved, when people are saved and healed in parking lots of department stores, when people effortlessly worship for hours and time seems to stand still, when youth take control of a church and bring their parents to Christ, when limbs find instant life and cancer vanishes, when a crowd is transformed from a congregation into a seething, boiling army of compassion and outreach, you no longer have the luxury of calling it a good meeting or a momentary thrill.

This one blindsided me!  I don’t even have pictures for you yet.  I am glad that I do not have pictures because that tends to immediately categorize this as a cliché media event.  This has a significance that cannot be ignored and must not be stereo typed.  I really want to impress upon you my   motivation in writing to you. I want you to be encouraged by what is happening and at the same time I want to protect the purity and innocence of this new fire in Yuba City.

Jim and Christine Carpenter lead The Bridge Church in Yuba City.  After sudden growth they were forced to convert an industrial granary into a mighty center of the Glory of God.  In ten days they transformed this industrial building into an outreach wonder.

They invited me knowing full well that I no longer do multi-night meetings that have a predetermined end and are not open to extending.  They share my passion for mighty events that deeply alter a community.  I can tell you for a fact that this time the fire broke out before I got here!  I walked into the GLORY.

There is a greater significance to this than we know because Yuba City now becomes a part of a ring of fire over Northern California that we have faithfully reported to you.

A quick look at my schedule shows the explosive nature of these outbreaks over Northern California.  Tonight I will speak at the Bridge as the fire continues at 7PM.  Tomorrow Saturday February 23rd at 5PM we begin our first Living Proof Rally at the ARC in Martinez. Tuesday February 26th I am in Manteca for the 209 REVIVAL.  Then I return to Yuba City for the continuation of this amazing outpouring.  On top of all of this, we will return to Santa Rosa on Good Friday March 29th in the Friedman Event Center.

If you are coming to the Bridge tonight get there early.  Be sure to bring those who do not know Christ or need healing.  Be prepared for an unfiltered collision with the Glory and power of God.  This is one of those occasions where words cannot do justice you simply have to be there.

Stay tuned for more from Yuba City!

Was this the greatest night of miracles I have ever seen?

Before I say anything else, I want to remind you of what I have seen.  I have seen little Paul get up and walk in the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, I have seen Barbara in Seattle restored from the neck down to walk and jump.  I have Warren in Baltimore come out of a body brace.  I have seen Delma who was blind receive her sight in Oakland but I have never seen anything quite as overpowering as the mass miracle that took place last night in Santa Rosa.

How powerful was it?  The staff was ruined.  All of us sat rehearsing the events of the night until the very wee hours of the morning.  All of us admitted that we had never seen anything approaching this before.  Pastor Kel from the Lighthouse walked up to me and with a firm handshake and a deep look into my eyes says, “Mario, I was here for the entire 15 weeks of the Santa Rosa Fire and this was by far the most powerful night of all.”

We live in a time when ministry is so intense, discouraging and combative that even the Pope resigns!  We are in a season of despair that is swallowing the up our young and wiping out an entire generation.  Santa Rosa sits in the vortex of the socialist, secular progressive mind set, a mentality that has zero use for God or the Bible.

Cover for Augus 2012t Newsletter

Yet, for all of this, the Holy Spirit sends such a drenching as I have never experienced.  He Himself sent a presence that nullified the threats of our time, removed any doubt of the power of the Gospel to prevail in any culture at any time, regardless of how dark or doubtful it is.

Mario who got healed and of what?  My answer is simply more questions, who didn’t get healed and what didn’t get healed?  The best way to describe it is to imagine that the entire complex of Living Word Family Church suddenly morphed into a space ship that gently lifted up out of the fear, evil and heartache of this life and landed in a place of profound peace, joy and power.

It was as if God had altered the temperament of the people to handle such glory.  As one weaving, swaying being of compassion people reached out to others and with holy hands brought the miracle the most pain wracked bodies.  A testimony service would have been futile.  At the very least would it have taken all night!

I kept thinking about the souls that met Jesus at the beginning of the meeting.  I laughed inside because they would go home assuming this was the way church always was!  How gloriously messed up they are now for anything less than the GLORY!

In the coming days I will relate to you more of the details of this single night.  For now rejoice and take heart that God is on the move.  He has heard our cry.  Last night Jesus made a statement by fire.  No way will America go down without the most amazing intervention of God!

Now we are preparing to return to the Friedman Events Center in Santa Rosa for Good Friday March 29th!
