Is it right to offer miracle healing to a skeptical public?

Is it right to offer  miracle healing to a skeptical public?

When that young campus radical put his hands on my throat, I know that neither he nor I understood the rage in his hands.  Evil understood clearly what was at stake.  It knows all about the souls that can be saved and the bodies that would be healed when any miracle ministry, anywhere is born.

There is a good reason why my mind raced back to that fateful day in Berkeley.   All afternoon I paced and prayed on the hillside above the campus of 44,000 students.  Two violent forces were colliding within me.  The burning question?  How do I reach a generation of students bent on Marxist revolution?  What reminded me of that day?   The fact that we are now dealing with a White House that is bent on Marxist revolution.

On that hill so many years ago one voice argued that I must study the great modern apologists of the faith.  I should immerse myself in Francis Schaeffer, C.S. Lewis, and G.K. Chesterton.   The other voice said simply, “it is not by might nor by power but by my spirit.”

That night I would get my answer in a most emphatic way.   It happened in front of the Student Union Building of Cal Berkeley at about 11PM.   I was sharing my “apologetic faith” with a flower child.  In the darkness, I could not see the angry radical who was stealing up behind me.

This atheist Goliath grabbed me by the neck and proceeded to choke the life out of me. Now the words of great Christian intellectuals were useless.  There was a demon fueling his rage.

God ordered me to take my stand in the power of the Spirit. In my own faltering way I did.   My assailant suddenly stopped and stood stunned by something behind me in the shadows.  To this day I do not know what startled him, I only know that I ran, and as I ran I affirmed my commitment to the Supernatural Gospel of Christ.

first miracle services in Berkeley

That what when we began telling people they could come and be healed.  But is that right?  Is it right to offer hope to those who medical science cannot help?  Is it right to raise expectations to those who have given up on everything else?

The world began to change when Jesus stood and read these words from the book of Isaiah:  Luke 4: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; 19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

1. He was hanging out a shingle:   When you start a business you do what is called hanging out a shingle.    A Shingle is a small signboard that indicates a professional office. The world began to change when Jesus stood and read these words.

He was announcing the start and the content of His miracle ministry and He did it publicly.   Here are 6 targets of His ministry:

Give good news to the poor.

Heal the broken hearted.

Proclaim liberty to the captives.

Recovery of sight to the blind.

To set at liberty those who are oppressed.

To declare the time of God’s favor.

2.  He announces by what authority He is announcing this.

“Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”  What an astounding statement that is!   Every Jew knew that verse.  Everyone in Israel has been waiting for that verse to be fulfilled and Jesus flat out says that He is fulfilling it. Talk about raising the hopes of the people!

Yet it is right that He does this so that the miracles can be released.  And that is precisely what the Church of Jesus should do.  We must go public about the resurrection of Jesus did to the works of Satan and all of the benefits of the Gospel.

3.  God was with Him in this project. Acts 10:38 says, “Jesus went about doing good healing all who were oppressed of the devil for God was with Him.  Jesus was not acting on His own initiative.

Likewise, we are the continuation of Christ’s war on the works of Satan.  We too must make a public announcement, we must set the time and the place that the Holy Spirit has designated for the supernatural to appear.

Having settled the question in Berkeley we announced our first healing rally.  I was such a newbie that I stood in front of the audience frozen in fear.  What I did not know yet is that God rewards those who show up for war.

In the crowd was a young man lying unconscious on a couch at the back of the chapel.  He had shot a mixture of LSD and Heroin and it made him comatose.   Supernaturally, he woke up and his symptoms vanished.   He came to the front and knelt in utter adoration of God.   This single healing launched ten years of harvest on that university campus.

So today I am in prayer because we have gone very public in the East Bay Area of Northern California.  Thousands of card invitations have been given directly to the public and they plainly state that miracles will happen in the meetings.

If this was a human endeavor I would be panicking right now instead I am clothed with a divine peace.  Nothing man can say or do will be able to undo the conviction that I feel that this is a God event.

Let Church leadership everywhere listen from their heart.  If ever I knew that Jesus was trying to get a message through it is this:  Seek Him now.  Set a date at His bidding.  Prepare your people for signs and wonders.  Vow to give all glory to God.  Invite to public to come and see the awesomeness of our God!

Student asked to remove her cross may leave SSU

Sonoma State University student Audrey Jarvis wears a cross necklace much like the one she was asked to remove while working at a school event in June. Jarvis said a supervisor asked her to remove the necklace while representing the school. SSU officials on Monday personally apologized to her.

The Sonoma State student who was asked by a supervisor to remove her cross to avoid offending non-Christians says she’s not sure she will ever return to the school, but she said the university seems to be taking the matter seriously.

“The university is doing everything right and if I do decide to attend somewhere else, it would not be for lack of effort on the university’s part,” Audrey Jarvis said Monday after she and her attorney, Hiram Sasser, met with university officials.

University spokeswoman Susan Kashack said she hoped Jarvis returns to school in the fall, but in the wake of the incident, the student says she is considering her options for her junior year.

“I have some things to figure out; I’m taking a little time for myself,” she said. “I am not really sure where my future will take me, but hopefully within the next few weeks, I will be able to make some decisions and we’ll take it from there.”

Jarvis, 19, an event planner for the student government, known as Associated Students, was working at a student orientation event last month when a supervisor approached her to ask her to remove or hide a large cross necklace, saying it might be offensive or off-putting to students looking to attend the school or join the organization.

Jarvis, upset by the request, left the orientation early. After talking with lawyers from the Texas-based Liberty Institute, she filed a complaint with the university. The story hit Fox News late last month and was picked up by news organizations as far away as the U.K.

President Ruben Armiñana and others at the university quickly apologized for the incident, saying it was a misguided but well-intentioned mistake by the supervisor.

Neither Jarvis nor the university have named the person responsible for asking her to remove the cross. Jarvis said she didn’t want to “drag anyone’s name through the mud” and the university has said it is a “personnel matter,” which they treat as confidential.

Associated Students Executive Director Erik Dickson was out of the office this week and could not be reached for comment.

Monday’s meeting, which was closed to the press, was intended for the university to pass on its apology directly to Jarvis and to explain how the matter will be handled administratively.

Jarvis had asked for a “religious accommodation,” essentially a religiously based exception to any policy the university might have about wearing jewelry or other clothing. But since the university does not have any such policy, spokeswoman Kashack said, there is nothing from which to exempt her.

“There is nothing on this campus that anyone could wear or say that would be not OK,” she said.

Student ordered to remove cross necklace at California college

  • An official at Sonoma State University ordered a student working at a freshman orientation fair to remove or hide a cross necklace on two separate occasions. The unnamed official feared that other students could be offended by the two-inch-long symbol of Christianity.

The first of the two incidents occurred at the public school in Northern California’s wine country on June 27, reports Fox News. The official, an orientation supervisor, warned Sonoma State student Audrey Jarvis that “the chancellor” enforced a policy against wearing religious items.

“The chancellor” is presumably Timothy P. White, the chancellor of the entire 23-school California State University system.

According to Hiram Sasser, an attorney representing Jarvis, the supervisor advised the practicing Catholic “that she could not wear her cross necklace because it might offend others, it might make incoming students feel unwelcome.”

Jarvis, 19, said she was floored by the explanation.

“I was offended because I believe as a Christian woman it is my prerogative to display my faith any way I like so long as it is not harming anyone else,” she told Fox News. “I was very hurt and felt as if the university’s mission statement — which includes tolerance and inclusivity to all — was violated.”

On a second occasion, the supervisor ordered Jarvis to conceal the cross under her shirt or get rid of it. That’s when the liberal arts major decided to bail early on the orientation job.

Sasser, the director of litigation at the conservative- and Christian-oriented Liberty Institute, calls the supervisor’s actions “obvious religious discrimination” and is seeking an apology.

The attorney added that the law is pretty settled in this area. “State employees may wear crosses while they are performing their duties as long as the wearing does not interfere with the employees’ duties or harm the employer’s business interests,” Sasser counseled.

Management at Sonoma State, a school known mostly as a laidback hippie haven with a nice library, is apologizing repeatedly and without reservation.

“Someone who works here was concerned that the cross might be off-putting to students who are coming to campus for the first time,” confirmed university spokeswoman Susan Kashack. She added that the supervisor’s behavior was “completely wrong.”

“It was absolutely an inappropriate action for him to make that request of her,” Kashack added, according to Fox News.

“It’s possible that political correctness got out of hand.”

Sonoma State President Ruben Arminana is in on the groveling as well.

“The president was very upset about it and asked me to contact Miss Jarvis and give a profuse apology,” Kashack said.

Kashack noted that school officials have communicated with the unidentified employee who ordered Jarvis to remove the cross necklace. However, she refused to disclose what was said or if he faces any sort of consequences.

A National Youth Revival is coming.

There is a fresh openness to the Gospel about to break on America.  It will not come through the usual channels.  The case for this prediction is strong so please take a moment to read this, not just to be encouraged, but to be prepared.

During my entire ministry, I have studied the Word of God.  Even though I believe in prophetic words it has been my habit to absorb as much as I possibly could directly from the Bible.

It is from this body of evidence that I will make give you my considered opinion that the last great revival on earth will be a youth revival.  That is correct, the fuse for global awakening is the young.

The last two verse of the Old Testament is teeming with meaning: Malachi 4:  5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. 6 And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

There are three quotes in that verse that have great meaning to you right now.

1. “I will send”:  It will come from God Himself. This means that nothing can prevent its arrival. Times of refreshing from the throne of God make their way to Earth without regard to human planning and often at the most unexpected time and in a most unexpected way.

John 1:6 says, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.”  John the Baptist baffled experts.  He was a phenomenon that violated every religious opinion of his time.  So is it today that God will give the order and the raging of men will not alter the course of this event.

2. “He will turn the hearts”:   1 Kings 18: 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”

3. Lest:  Even though this is a threat it is the most powerful part of the promise.  It reminds us that it is wrong to assume judgment or as Jonah did, secretly desire judgment. Joel 2:13 tells us, “So rend your heart, and not your garments; Return to the Lord your God, For He is gracious and merciful, Slow to anger, and of great kindness; And He relents from doing harm. 14 Who knows if He will turn and relent, And leave a blessing behind Him—A grain offering and a drink offering For the Lord your God?

Now here are my reasons for believing we are at the brink of a youth harvest in America:

1. I believe that God provoked Satan to overplay his hand thereby getting youth sick of excess.  Immoral activist, aging baby boomers are beginning to look disgusting and tedious to youth.  Ambivalence toward Abortion, socialism, Europe and atheism and even feminism is driving them investigate Christ.

2. It is such a bad time that it is a good time. Since revival is sent to avert disaster it means that it will occur just before disaster.  The times that seem to make revival look impossible are very the times in which they appear.

Why do I think that disaster will be averted?  Lost in all of the dizzying changes to marriage, drugs, healthcare, is the fact that the majority of Americans still believe in Christ.  Even though there is widespread lukewarm faith, there is a living taproot.  Radical voices have hijacked the microphone but they do not represent reality.  America is way more spiritually flammable that experts know and the fire of heaven will spread fast.

Three things we need to do right now:

1.  Men become fathers!  Spiritual fathers will usher in the next revival.  Hitler sensed a vacuum in the youth of Germany devastated by the First World War.  He knew that a father figure could own the heart of the youth.  If you open your heart you will also open your schedule and your home to an orphaned generation.

2. Make your prayer for revival sincere and knowledgeable.   Much of our prayer is bouncing off the walls because it is not coming from a heart that is convinced or aware of what they are asking for. When true prayer appears it is not only effective it is contagious.

8.  We must build barns.  Proverbs 10:5 “He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.”

John 4:35 “Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.”

Luke 10:2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

No longer can church be a monument to a bygone era or a marketing center for mass superficiality.  Our buildings must be retooled, they must become youth oriented upper rooms where God turns the wreckage of young lives into trophies of His power and Grace!

These verses serve as a loving warning.  Churches must start now to make room for interruptions. Youth will arrive.  We will be ordered to go out and get them.  Don’t say it is not possible or that youth are not ready.  The stage is set, the fuse is lit I pray you are ready!

The Brontosaurus in the Room

The Brontosaurus in the Room.

No one, and I mean no one, needs to tell you that America is dying from the inside out.  The symptoms of death are so far out of the closet, we can no longer see the closet.

The American College degree is now a recipe for slavery to long term debt and the false hope of meaningful work.

The partisan spirit is so toxically angry that many would rather see the nation die than to consider solutions for the other party.

Take just the area of physical and mental health. 70% of Americans are on pills.  How is that possible?  How can only 30% of the population function without medication?

Today, more Americans die from suicide than from car accidents.  Think of that.  How did American life become so unbearable?

The leading cause of death for children under 5 is now their parents.  Wrap your mind around that.

The spike in crime is the highest in decades and the rate of marriage is the lowest in our history.

We are sick with a deep abiding sadness.  Too many of us are walking around with a death wish so pandemic that it rivals what any eastern bloc country felt during the dregs of communism.

It would be hilarious if it were not so pathetic to hear the explanations and solutions proffered by our leaders.  A towering devotion to bankrupt ideas has drained our leaders of common sense and left them comatose.  They are too drowsy to see the truth.

The worst part is what we refuse to talk about.  There is one solution we are desperately avoiding.  In fact, it is wrong to suggest it!  We have passed laws to silence it and we fiercely attack anyone who would dare say it out loud.

We used to have an elephant in the room but this is the brontosaurus in the room.  We must consider immorality.  Our immorality has brought all of this on us.

In a stunning moment of honesty King Hezekiah summed up Israel in these verses: 2 Chronicles 29: 6  “For our fathers have trespassed and done evil in the eyes of the Lord our God; they have forsaken Him, have turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the Lord, and turned their backs on Him. 7 They have also shut up the doors of the vestibule, put out the lamps, and have not burned incense or offered burnt offerings in the holyplace to the God of Israel. 8 Therefore the wrath of the Lord fell upon Judah and Jerusalem, and He has given them up to trouble, to desolation, and to jeering, as you see with your eyes. 9 For indeed, because of this our fathers have fallen by the sword; and our sons, our daughters, and our wives are in captivity.”

Jesus and Paul the Apostle were never vague or reticent to warn of the damage of immorality.  Here is a list of things, based on their model that we need  to see and preach.

1. The problem is not global warming but moral cooling.  Matthew 24:12 “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”-Jesus

2. Our crisis was created by immorality.  2 Timothy 3: 1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!  -Paul

3. A selfish, entitled, addicted society does not need further coddling but the electrode paddles of Holy Spirit conviction.  2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.” -Paul

Until the church forces the issue we cannot hope to get it on the table.  We must face the consequences of lying, perversion and godlessness in the center of our culture.  We cannot even begin a discussion on repentance until we admit the damage that unrighteousness is doing.

It is silly to talk around it and deny its centrality in our national disaster.

Why am I standing next to this empty wheelchair?

Ironically, not long ago I preached a sermon about how we should all hate to see an empty chair in a church.  Here is the one great exception to that: An empty wheelchair!

At some point back about 11 months ago it became known as the Santa Rosa Fire; a family of God breathing believers  with a from several churches with a simple passion for more of Jesus.  Nobody can credit the continuing ignition of this revival in Santa Rosa to any one man or congregation.

When I agreed to return last night for the one year anniversary of this FIRE I was concerned about nostalgia.  I did not want to try to recreate something Jesus did before.  I told them that I did not want to Twist Again Like We Did Last Summer.”

One thing we did revisit was the miracle of the man paralyzed 38 years who waited by the pool of Bethesda in John 5.  A simple but mighty truth overcame us all.  By healing the man without an angel stirring the water and by doing it on the Sabbath day Jesus destroyed two religious abuses in one fell swoop.

Satan yearns to attach a superstition to any simple truth and fog it with side issues.  When form and ritual overwhelm the original goal we see silly things.  The Pharisees sought loopholes and hilariously ended up working hard at resting on the Sabbath.

We can all see the modern versions of this.  We all believe in angels, gold dust, feathers, soaking and even shaking under the power but it is so easy to forget Jesus Himself.  When any of these acts become an end in themselves or a means to the end we lose something priceless.   Jesus is the means and the end!

Miracles do the most immediate and widespread damage to Satan.  This is why he labors more in this arena than any other.  His constant aim is to pervert the simplicity of healing:  By adding emotionalism and superstition, he able to discredit the glorious weapon of healing.

I have no illusions about the limits of my preaching.  What happened next in the meeting could never be credited to oratory:  Jesus came and began to heal people in the audience.  It happened effortlessly and freely.  Jesus prevailed over every method and approach to healing and simply removed disease.

I walked to the back of the hall and the lady in the wheelchair caught my eye.  I could see the epic struggle in her heart.  She strained to see all of the other healings and wanted desperately for it to be her turn.

The next time that I walked by her the struggle had subsided; she now had the look of someone simply waiting on Jesus.   That faith, the miracle which only Jesus can impart began to emanate in her soul.

Back in the pulpit, I turned to survey the audience and we were all startled to see her up out of the wheelchair.  Stutter steps turned into a forceful stride.  After one lap she was not content with power walking so she began to run!   Bedlam!

Here is the message of this miracle to you:  Jesus has not changed!  When we let Him dominate our crisis miracles overtake us.  Every last drop of trouble you face can be surrendered to His care.

That meeting you should go to. By Mario Murillo

That meeting you should go to.

We live in a time where we are barraged with invitations to meetings.  How can we know what meeting we should go to?  We know we cannot go to all of them or even some that are worthy of our time.

Meeting organizers are very aware of the fact that we cannot go to many meetings.  This is why impressive marketing is everywhere.  The problem is that the marketers are often disconnected from those who actually put on the meeting.  The tendency is over promise and under deliver.  It is kind of like the movie trailer that made the film look awesome but the film itself was a total let down.  Sadly, this is what happens when the people who make the trailer have more talent than the filmmaker!

We all have that ideal meeting in the back of our mind.  It would be a meeting that is powerful without getting weird.  You want a meeting that is a good balance of being persuasive enough to hold your non-churched friend’s attention and yet powerful enough for them to be transformed by God.

It would be a meeting with freedom of worship but does not worship…worship.  Christ is the object of the worship.  Worship should exalt God and draw the outsider into a consciousness of Jesus.  When it degenerates into antics it is because the worshipper has lost sight of exaltation and merely seeks attention.

Signs and wonders are a prevalent theme right now.  Meetings that claim to feature them must be careful to let the Holy Spirit dictate miracles.  We must never be caught whipping up a frenzy that we believe will cause miracles; this belief is straight out of paganism.

The key is to stop trying to conjure up the Holy Spirit and instead simply trust Jesus and allow the Spirit of God to overtake us.

It is also common because of this emotional excess to hear many preachers bash meetings that pursue signs and wonders.  This is dangerous and wrong.  It is like gun control, when you outlaw the gifts of the Spirit then only outlaws will have the gifts of the Spirit.

So what is the secret to this kind of meeting and the meeting that you should go to?  It is summed up in a simple phrase, “God has a better idea.”  If only leaders would learn that God loves people more than we do, He knows them infinitely more deeply than we do and finally, He knows exactly how to get their attention.

The Holy Spirit seeks vessels to work through; He does not seek field reps who want to rebrand the Kingdom of God.  I will admit that fads work.  However, even when they do work it does not last and ultimately leaves the work of God to lose ground.

The meeting you should go to should be a place where you do not go to watch God move but to link hearts with others to contend for a work of God.  I know that right now Jesus is yearning to make every Church a relevant power center in this evil time.

Somewhere near you right now are a group of people with honest hearts.  They are neither flamboyant nor boring.  They simply want God’s best in this dark time and they deserve your support. – M.M.
